WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hi
Its Donna and mark,
We are from Wakefield and have two children.
This looks like just the thing to speak to people who have been there and done that, its just what we need. My husband Mark is a sparky and have talked for a while about moving to Australia and i`v finally cracked so here i am while he is on the sofa watching sport.
We would like to know where to bloody start, we would love to know if its best to use an agent, we don't want to pay through the nose if we can do it ourselves any help would be great.
Thanks The Allen's
Mark (27) Donna (35) Kenya (9) Deacan (5)
Everyone has different opinions on using an agent or not. We are using one for the second part of our application (too boring and complicated to explain) because I want someone to blame if there's a problem!!! Lots of people don't bother using one and don't have any problems. However some find it takes longer to go it alone because mistakes can be made that could have been avoided with the advice of an expert.
As your hubby's a sparky, with all necessary qualifications I assume, then you shouldn't have any problems passing the skills assessment, but if you're not particularly confident people then it's good to have someone there to advise you if the paperwork you are submitting is good enough. It's a very strict procedure.
Have you spoken to any agents? It's a good idea to go online, get some numbers from the web or from recommendations and phone a few up. That way you might get a good feeling from someone in particular and feel you can then trust you're not wasting money. I would say on average you're looking at anything from £1500 to over £2000 just for the agent's fees. On top of that you have charges for police checks, meds, and much more.
Anyway, good luck and I am sure other people will post replies with their opinions too.
Hi Donna we found it easier to use an agent as we didn't know where to start with the whole process, but like kate says alot of people go alone and are fine. Good luck with what you decide Tania X

Thanks for that, this site is great and the best thing is to get other peoples knowledge.
Hope everything is going smooth for you.?
Mark has got all the grades and is doing more exams to get the new regs, ( 17th addition) they change it all the time and he needs it anyway.
I think this is going to take longer than we thought.
Take care and thanks allot
