WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Well, we have done alot of talking over the last couple of days and we have decided that we are going to start the application!
Carolyn - we are same as you - we have never been to Oz and if I'm honest, we will have to scrimp and save in order to pay for the visa application so I can't see us affording a recci! it's a shame though, I would have liked to go and spend some time there.
We are thinking about Victoria. I think the main reason is there seem to be quite alot of mechanic jobs in and around Melbourne and the suburbs look nice (and affordable!). Also, it's not hot hot hot all of the time.
Thanks again to everyone for your words of wisdom - I'm sure we will have a million more questions in the months to come!

Hi there, just reading your post and remembering when i was going through the emotions and decisions that you are going through.I would suggest a trip over first,i know it's expensive, but less so if you don't like what you see.
Australia isn't everyones cup of tea,but a lot of people i know have come here and loved it,hope you make the right decision for you and your family.Good luck!
Thanks for your post - I noticed you're coming back to sunny Scotland - what didn't work out for you?
I think it would be good to hear the not-so-good bits too, I'm trying hard not to look through rose-tinted glasses (although as a natural optomist this can be tricky!).
We are going to start the visa application and work out how we can beg, steal or borrow the extra cash for a recci as I think it would be easier on the kids if they could visualise us living there.

I felt like you too - I have wanted this for 15 years and finally did it 5 weeks ago - honestly - and I know its early days - feel like I've made the biggest mistake of my life! Like you we had a fab life at home, gorgeous house, lovely location, amazing friends, no money worries, good jobs within 5 mins from home, 4 holidays a year - feel like a fool right now. OH job not turned out as hoped, he is a linesman and they have not manged to get his stuff sorted so hence no licence and no prospect of one in the near future by the sounds of it so he is putting up lights and hating every minute. He has been in tears, he just wants to go home so much its heartbreaking. We also got Canberra (only place we could get a job) and its just so boring its untrue which is not helping us at all. My daughter lives in Cairns and at the moment me being in the same country is the only thing keeping us here but we will stick it out for another 6 months and then decide. I saw a post on somewhere the other day saying - you spend your life searching the world for your dream, then you realise you had it at home all along - god I could have cried! Think very carefully and bring plenty money cos you will need it.
Thanks for your honesty - I really feel for you. Maybe get a bit easier when you start to make new friends and OH work sorted?
At the moment I am swinging from 'desperate to go this minute' to 'why would I want to give up the life I love?' with alarming regularity.
I really do hope things work out for you - if you ever need to let off some steam, I'm here most days!
Take care
Lynne

I'd also have to say to think very carefully. If you like what you have and things are going well for you then why change - there is absolutely nothing magic about moving your life to a different place, it is still going to be the life that you make it. What would a "better" life look like for you? What are your priorities? What makes your life a good one?
If you are offered an opportunity not to be missed then dont miss it, but if your desire to come here is as a result of watching tv programs - which are blatant advertising and you know realistically that advertising always needs considerable judgement - then dont come. Make the most of the glorious life you do have and take holidays abroad for the spice in your life (you will have more of them from UK than you ever could from Aus).
pls can you tell me if your oh is still a mechanic, and where abouts in oz you are, my oh is also a mechanic and we don't know where to relocate too we have 2 small children and are looking for a small village to relocate too and can you pls tell me which agent you used there seems to be so many my head is picked and l am just starting. thanks very much and sorry about the ten thousand questions lynne
You may want to rethink the small village thing - Aus villages are not at all like UK villages. One of the disadvantages of small town living is that employment is limited hence the reason that people are generally leaving the countryside for bigger towns. You would have more luck with small country towns - dont know where you would be thinking of going but for example the Victorian towns like Ballarat, Bendigo, Benalla etc are big enough to offer reasonable employment opportunities but not big city environments. There is also a lot of distance between small country towns so you dont get nice contained little villages 5 miles out of big towns as a general rule. There can also be differences with rural living like not being on town water supplies and needing to have tank water (not a huge disadvantage but just a difference), having to drive 25km to a supermarket or 50km to a doctor, not being within mobile telephone coverage, not having broadband access etc.
