just starting out

Hello all, finally made the big decision to make the big move there is SO much to do and unsure of where to start,my hubby is an electrician/maintanance engineer and has done the online test which gave him enough points to get started,we have two little girls age 6 months and 6 years,if theres anyone out there who could point us in the right direction as to what we should be putting as priority we would really appreciate it,makes me feel sick the thought of moving all that way and leaving my elderly mom and oldest son behind, but excited at the sametime, have been looking at the Brisbane area want somewhere that i feel safe in for me and my girls(where we live now is the pits),any help or advice greatly received, thanks all,
Deb and Mark.

Hi, just wanted to say welcome to PIO. We're on the Gold Coast, and although my kids miss their family, they love it here. There are so many playparks, lovely beaches, and all the major theme parks are here. There's a lot of us poms on the coast, so you wouldn't be stuck for company! Guess with hubbys job he could find work in most places, so it's just picking where you fancy!
Good luck,
Jo x

OK so you've made the decision well done on that point!

I think the next step would be to decide if you are going to use an agent or not. I found the best way to decide this was to look up your OHs assesing body TRA & Vetassess are the most common (i think 4 trades anyway)
If you understand what they want & can provide that & more besides (it takes alot of time researching & organizing) then it can be done on your own.
However a lot of people choose to go with an agent You still need to provide all the refs and details but they will guide you through the process. indivdual choice cannot guide you there.
well will leave you for now to ponder hope this helps let me know if i can help any more.

Congrats on making the big decision to move - it's massive. Exciting & terrifying at the same time!! I came over here because my boyfriend (now husband) is from Newcastle (2hrs north of Sydney). It's really different to home. I 90% love here - beaches, fresh air, healthy life, great weather etc but I still miss home, my mum and friends etc.
My husband used to play rugby in UK that's how we met but he went back to being an electrician when we came to Oz. Your hubby will not struggle to find work. It's important you find something you like doing, so you don't go mad. Just stock up on Cadbury's before you come over, it tastes different here. I would definitely recommend Sydney to live - it's a great city, but the house prices are expensive to buy/rent. Newcastle is a great big country town, so if you're not a city person, you might consider. Hope this helps?

Hello Deb & Mark

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

Please see the following links:

Is your occupation in demand? - Workers - Visas & Immigration

A-Z Occupations List - Australian Skills Recognition Information

As far as I know, Electricans are all having to go to VETASSESS for their skills assessments, but you need to check what sort of electrican Mark really is.

VETASSESS is a two-stage process, involving a paper-based skills assessment and then a practical test. Please see here:

VETASSESS - Vocational Education Training and Assessment Services

For the visa, please see here:

Best wishes

Gill
