WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hi Eye see
Just wanted to know if you could advise any suitable areas to live I may have a job in Boxhill (mel) (subject to interview via 457 Visa) we have two children 5 and 8 years and are looking at possible area to live. We live near the coast now so I am reluctant to move too far inland. Any advice would be greatfully recieved
Hi there
Apologies for the delay in responding. Mornington is a beautiful area on the mornington peninsula. Every local I talk to (from outside the area) always have good things to say, which is testiment in itself! We actually currently rent a Unit at the moment (small bungalow) and there are loads of websites to hunt for rental properties. I would recommend realestate.com, as most of the local agents use this site to both rent and sell properties. If you move down this way, you won't be disappointed with the area
The only issue with living this far down the peninsula is the travel to the city. If you were to drive to the city it would probably take between 1.5 and 2 hours. There is a train runs from Frankston 2 suburbs up which takes 1hour 10min to get you to Flinders Street in the CBD. Apart from that, no worroes!!
Hope this helps
Ian
There,
I just noticed your thread. We are hoping to move to Oz, just in the thinking stage at the moment, but have decided to go on holiday to Melbourne next May (hopefully). I like the look of Mornington, are there many good villas to rent there, or can you point me in the right direction as to where to stay in your area. (Not too expensive)?
What is Mornington like? Is it fairly near to Melbourne itself?[/quote]
have just googled Boxhill and note that it is east of the CBD, don't know the area that well.
One thing I can say, particularly on the eastern side and south / southeastern side of the city is that the closer you get the more expensive the suburbs, but this is a generalisation.
Areas like St Kilda, Hampton, Sandringham i.e near the coast and relatively close to boxhill would be quite expensive - refer to the website realestate.com (all of the agents tend to use this) for more details.
Hope this helps you, if you need any additonal information, please don't hesitate to ask.
Cheers
Ian

Just waiting to hear about telephone interview now. We have been looking on the realestate website and I think Mornington is abit too far south for us, but my partner lived in Mel, for 6 months a few years ago and says the area is fantastic so it might be a bit of a weekend retrea. We have been looking at Sandringham/mordialloc area's any thoughts.

Hi there Carolyn
Have you decided on an agent yet, if not I can recommend the one that we used, although I must admit that I had to do most of the research and running around. Give me a shout if you need the name.
Good luck
Ian

Hi there Tracy
Apologies for the delay in responding, things have been a little hectic here. In answer to your question, no I don't think that they are..the market in aus is ultra competitive and all banks are falling over each other to offer you a mortgage. You will of course have to satisfy their underwriting criteria (in other words be able to meet a few basic requirement as stipulated by the bank).
I'm not sure what the int rates are in the UK, but I was surprised at how high the rates were, compared to the UK. When we arrived in Jan of this year the int rates in the uk (Banks standard variable rate) were around 6% give or take .1 or .2 (i think), in Aus the Standard Variable rates for the Banks at the moment is around 9.4% although you would definately be able to obtain a discount from this. A number of the bank package products together and apply discount accordingly. You have to be careful which deal you enter into as there can be a number of hidden costs if you don't read the small print.
Hope this answers your questions, if you need to know anything else, please ask.
Regards
Ian

Hi there
The agent that we used was called 1st Contact -email:migration@1stcontact.com www.1stcontact.com.
Please don't think that this is a personal recommendation, you will obviously have to 'suss' them out yourself. They did the required 'job' for us and got us the visa , although as I said in my last post, I did most of the running around!
If you type in there name on any search engine you should be able to locate them, hope this helps and goof luck!
Ian
