16+ Education

Hi, I'm moving to australia at the end of november this year just after my 16th birthday. I wanted to know which year i'll be going into at school because im worried that it's going to mess up my education.

Hi Gracee
I think you should go into yr 10 as soon as you arrive in Nov and then you will move to yr 11 in Jan.

I would also advise that you start school straight away even if there is only a week or so left til the end of term.
The main reason is so you can get yourself sorted and (hopefully) choose the subjects you want to study in Jan, another reason is to make some friends straight away. You will not go back to school until the end of Jan otherwise and it can be a long 6/8 weeks when you dont know anyone (I know as this is what happened to my 16yr daughter this year).

We arrived here on Jan 4th and within days of starting school (end of Jan) my daughter was being invited out to parties/get togethers at other kids houses, was taken to the beach/city/shopping malls, the teenagers here were very friendly and really looked after her.

Hope this helps.

Sam x

It really depends on where you will be going to live but very generally, someone who has just turned 16 at the end of this year would be starting year 11 at the beginning of 2009. This is a good thing because years 11 and 12 make up the final two year course of school (a bit like A levels but with more subjects and more continuous assessment rather than big huge exams at the end). At the end of year 12 you can get a university entrance score if you have done academic type subjects.

Sorry, but I think if you are 16 at the end of the year, you would be going into year 12 next year? I have a son who has just turned 17 and is in year 12. You can, however, opt to start in year 11 if you wish...

Depends on the school, but our local schools will not accept you until you have a local address and live in the catchment area. I would have a good look around first in your situation.

Could be different in different States, we are in QLD.

Are You Sure?

Jarvi, I become concerned when speculation interferes with fact, particularly over such a decisive issue.
It is my understanding that a student turning 16 yrs old in Nov 08, would naturally qualify for yr 11 commencing Jan 09. That way they finish yr 12 at age 18, just as they would in UK.

Can someone in this situation please confirm?

pabloke99, I can only confirm that my son and his friends who are in year 12 are turning 17 this year. They finish school at 17 not 18 unless for some reason they are kept back a year or choose to stay back a year. This is in Queensland, cannot confirm for other States.

However, if the op wanted to, she could choose to start in year 11 instead of 12.

Hope this clarifys. Jarvl.

Have just shown this to my son in year 12, and he suggested I mention that the school year here starts in January, therefore op will be one of the youngest in the year rather than one of the older ones as she probably is now.

It really is a pain when you dont have national consistency about education!!!! It would definitely make most sense for someone to do the complete year 11 and 12 course just in case they want to go to university. They wouldnt be that much out of place by starting year 11 at 16.

Most of the other states have kids starting year 11 as they are turning 16 and the OP didnt state where they would be living.

I think OP said further in the thread that they were expecting to live near Brisbane, which was why I replied. I do agree, it is very confusing when different States have different rules!
