WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
We're off to Brisbane in July for 4 weeks for a reccie (rekkie?). We want to check the place out whilst also making a holiday of it, if anyone can help us sort out an itinerary that would be really appreciated.
We've decided on starting in Brisbane staying for about a week (in the city or the suburbs?) then moving up the sunshine coast (in a campervan?) for 10 days or so to check things out north of Brisbane whilst going to Noosa, Fraser & Whitsundays. Then back to Brisbane.
Anybody got any suggestions whether to stay in the city or just north for the 1st week (Redcliffe/Scarborough) and whether the motorhome option is a good one? Also what sort of things we can check out?
Thanks
Alan

Hi, Alan. Can't help you with your query, but be good to know how you get on cos we're going for a reccie in December. Keep us posted.
Hi, Sorry cant really answer your question but bumping your thread back up for you.
Brisbane to the Whitsundays is a long drive if thats what you were thinking of doing, we flew from Brisbane to Whitsundays and I think it was a 2 hour flight.
We stayed Indooroopilly when in Brisbane and the location for us was good, as from here you can explore Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast. Before we left for Australia we did check our hiring a camper van, but we thought they worked out alot of money although that could have all changed now.
I would check out the Australian Zoo (Sunshine Coast) also the Koala Sanctuary, Noosa beach as that is beautiful and I think the Dolphins come in about 6pm (bearing in mind we went December time). You havent mentioned exploring the Gold Coast but the Waterparks there are good fun along with other attractions.
I am sure you will have a lovely trip and keep us all posted

A reccie is a holiday used as a fact finding trip to research where youll be moving too.As long as you dont spend all your time doing touristy things they can be a worthwhile trip if you can financially afford it.The advice i give to anyone a reccie is drive, drive and drive somemore, this is the best way to choose or eliminate areas, where possible use normal roads rather than highways as this will take you through various suburbs.Visiting shopping centres in an area you think you will like is another good tip ,you can check out the locals shopping there! Its also worth buying a couple of jobs papers and seeing what areas your trade seems to be needed.hope this helps a bit

Hi,
we validated our visa in Jan/Feb. we stayed in city as only a short trip this time. you don't say how old kids are, but i know my kids (7 & 2 1/2) found it boring going around show houses, looking at land etc. so i made a deal we would go swimming everyday. some days in pool at 10.30 at night.
my kids loved sea world gold coast, australia zoo sunshine.
also free playareas at the beaches
good luck, let us know how you get on

For Taffy62 a reccie is short for reconnaissance - as in obtain information (usually about the enemy) but we've adapted it for a more friendly term :)
Thanks for your replies, thinking we'll spend part of the trip on the Gold Coast, point taken about the kids being bored so we've promised them Sea World & swimming although not sure how warm it'll be for that.
Without wishing to sound to pessimistic, we want to check out the areas without going into too much depth - viewing houses etc. Just in case our visa app doesn't come through we know we've had a great holiday.
Looked at costs for campervan hire, looks expensive but gives us a great deal of freedom.
As it stands I think the itinerary will be:
Land in Brisbane & stay 2-3 days in/near the centre to get over jetlag and get some first impressions of our chosen destination city.
Then for next 7-10 days move down to the Gold Coast and stay in one place while doing the Parks and checking out other areas, suburbs & the like.
Then back up to Brisbane, hire a campervan and drive north through the Sunshine Coast, taking in the northern suburbs, Bribie, Fraser Island and onto the Whitsundays.
Any advice on the Gold Coast - places to stay etc or the campervan bit would be appreciated.
Alan

We would strongly recommend hiring a camper van, we did it Jan 07 and had a brilliant time. Dont think we would of got to see half the places we did if we hadnt done it that way. We booked the van with Apllo on the internet before we went and stayed in it for 2 weeks. Picked up the van in Brisbane and travelled up to the Sunshine coast for a couple of days then down to Sydney and everywhere in between. One piece of advice if you are going to do it, try and book your pitches a day or two before you plan to arrive at a place, we struggled in some places - esp around the Gold coast to find somewhere to stay - but that was in Oz school holidays. Apollo give us vouchers for reduced fees at the Big 4 sites and some others, we were given a couple of guides to sites, maps and some freebies to get us started.
We got to speak with loads of locals on holiday, had our own BBQ's each night and had the freedom to stay a couple of nights in the places we liked and just kept on driving if places were not to our fancy, it was a real eye opener. Think its a really good way to see the place - we loved it!
