New To Poms in Oz.

Hi, we are new to this site but have been reading it for a while. I am in the process of a 457 visa at the moment. We still have a few issues that we still aren't sure about. My wife has diabetes and needs insulin which we dont know how much it would cost us over there plus we have been told that if we bring our dogs, 2 very well behaved boxers, with us that we would struggle to find rental accommodation. We really dont want to leave the dogs behind as we have had them a long time and our daughter would be distraught. Does anyone have any answers.
Dean

Hello Dean & Family

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

Whereaouts will you be living and working, please?

Lots of people have flown dogs to Oz before they have found homes to buy so although the choice of rentals may be narrower for a family with two dogs it is not non-existent.

You do need to book quarantine kennels about 5 months in advance, I believe, Have you investigated that side of things yet?

With regard to your wife's diabetes, try the following links I suggest:

Visitors to Australia - Medicare Australia

pbs.gov.au - Consumer - Home

Diabetes Australia

I am sure that DIabetes Australia would be able to give you loads of useful help.

If you could be more specific about where you are planning to move to, members who know the relevant area will be able to offer you more detailed help I expect.

Best wishes

Gill

Hi Gill,
Thanks for the reply. I am hoping to be relocating to either Glen Waverley or Mentone, in Victoria near Melbourne. We havent booked any quarentine kennels yet as we still dont have a date yet but the company wants me there within 3 months of the visa coming through. If it comes to it I would have to come out on my own and leave my wife and daughter in England with the dogs until we can get them out there. Its not ideal but I wouldnt want to miss the oppotunity of getting to Oz.

Thanks for the Diabetes sites, we shall check them out.

Dean.

Hi Dean,

Welcome to PIO as you can see some really clever people on this site - sadly I am not one of them !

Wishing you all the best with your application!

Hello there

I'm also new to the site, although I have been in Australia for 3 years now. (Was looking up stuff for my parents who are moving out).

I brought 2 cats over from the UK and had no problems finding a rental. A lot of the places I looked to rent were fine with dogs as long as they were 'outside dogs', and other places had conditions that pets were fine as long as you paid for a carpet clean afterwards.

Dogs in particular seem very big over here! More households seem to have them than they did in the UK - maybe just the climate and size of gardens makes it easier for people to have them here...

Hope that helps.

Sophie

Yes, they've gone for the CPV too. They applied in December and received the info regarding visa allocations being on hold until June. From the info they've managed to find they're hoping to hear in July time, but I guess we'll wait and see! Have your parents received theirs yet?

And we're based in Highvale, which is Samford area - NW.
