WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hi guys, Im new to all this. We have just lodged our inital papers to be assesed, I am going woth an agent who seems happy that everything is OK, Im worried stupid thought that something will go wrong, has anyone had any issues once theinital paperwork has gone off?
The main reason I am worried is Im going (hopefully) on a skilled sponsored visa as a hairdresser, however I havent done that for a fair few years, I do have city and guilds and my apprenticeship paers to prove it, Im now a careers advisor working in the prison service (basically help ex offenders to gain employment when released)
I have LOADS and LOADS of other questions but will start of gently! LOL
OK basically what else will I have to do? I have done a three page essay stating what my day was like, form a client coming in to going out etc, what other assesments are going ot be needed, as I havent done hairdressing for a wee while
Hi Helen
If you are applying for your skills assessment then yes you have to say what the job entails. This consists from welcoming the client, saying what products and chemicals and tools you use. The way it was explained to me was to assume the person reading your assessment is an alien.(havent a clue what a hairdressers is or does). I had to prove how many hours I work a week (at least 20) and prove I had done at least 900 hours training. I had to get client references, reference from ex employers saying what my job was and what it entailed, I aso had to get a letter of my accoutant as I am selfemployed.Basically just prove that I was a hairdresser. This took me weeks to get everything together. Hope this helps....

Can i just ask what qualifications you have in hairdressing please?
What it is, I am hoping some desperate hairdresser will employ me for 20 hrs a week(I can only work this amount of hours as my OH is going in on a student visa and there are limitations to how many hours I work) I have been training as a hairdresser for nearly two years and have got NVQ1 and NVQ2 and will have been working two morning a week on a work placement for six months do you reckon this would suffice for someone to take me on and could you tell me if NVQ2 is equivelent to their certificate III?
Sorry for all the question, but any info you have would be greatly appreciated.
Do you not have to have recent experience in hairdressing to pass the skills assessment? Only a know some trades have to have so many hours - and nursing for example, you had to have been working at least 20 hours as a nurse in the last 18 months to pass the assessment?

Ive done the whole essay writing thing, I wasnt self employed so will it just be a letter off my ex employer theat is needed do you think? alot of my clients have died (I lived in Hyde and Dor Shipman was responsible for a few of them!) any way it was 12 years ago and they probably wouldnt rememebr me anyway.
I worked for 8 years which included a 2 year YTS which I suppose would be a full 2 years worth of training.
I so hope that this is all I need............... we have discussed me going back to it for 12 months and doing my other job as well, how on earth I am going to manage a 40 hour a week job 20 hours hairdressing, a part time bar job AND my ebay shop as well as looking after 3 kids 2 cats and 1 husband is beyond me but we are determioned to get there so Ill just give up on sleeping as all I seem to do is wake up in hot sweats thinking everything has gone wrong!! LOL
I am interested in this thread as my OH a Sales & Marketing Manager doesn't meet the criteria for his assessment.
I used to be hairdresser too (trained and worked for 5 years) over 8 years ago. I still do a bit in my spare time but i thought you had to have worked in the skill for the last four years.
Also, If I did get on being a hairdresser, how long will I have to work in this occupation once i'm over there?
thanks

well I have been told by my loveley agent (AMA in Manchester, Shirley is fab!) that as my current job is on the list, but I haven got 4 years experience she thinks I will be OK, and as we are going on a family sponsored visa then I wont have to work as a hairdresser, If you get sponsored byan employer you have to stay with them for 2 years.
