Melbourne's a fantastic city! Cannot say enough good things about it, as I believe it has everything. An excellent culture all of it's own, warm friendly people, loads to see and do (make sure you visit Hanging Rock a half hour west from Melbourne, and also the Blue Lake, not so close, but very very blue and interesting in a place called Mount Gambier) and generally a very mild climate. Unlike Queensland it has a proper winter, so it will also be a great stepping stone to get used to the weather here, especially coming from the UK.
