Smile I'm a newbie,advice needed

Hi,
My hubby who is a panel beater and I are looking to move to Australia from Spain with our 2 children aged 13 & 14. We haven't even started the process yet, still doing our homework regarding location & work!
Can anyone suggest an area to start looking at bearing in mind school's, education & job opportunities?
Many thanks,
Angie

Hello Angie

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

I would think there would be no shortage of work for Panel Beaters in any of the main areas of Oz.

If you are looking for a climate that matches the Spanish one, Perth is probably your best bet. QLD is a lot further north so the climate is moe tropical. If you want a more temperate climate, Melbourne or Adelaide I would guess.

Have you tried looking on Google Earth and stuff like that?

Are you planning on making a rekkie visit to Oz at any time? That might be the best way to get started perhaps?

Best wishes

Gill

Hi Angie,
I would also strongly recommend a rekkie - it's best to form your own opinions as different people have different views and you can end up disappointed - we had some friends went out last year and came back after 6 weeks cause they had inaccurate expectations of the place they were going. Might be a bit expensive but after you've been out you'll never want to come back and your motivation to get the visa in etc will be sky high...that's what we found anyway.

Hi Powys Reiki & Gill,
Many thanks for replying. it would be ideal to make a trip over & look before we made the move & we will consider doing that. We really need to start the ball rolling as my hubby is now 42, so time is of the essence I suppose.
We were looking at Queensland but after reading some posts I think you may be right in looking at Perth.....we are accustomed to the hot weather now after living in Southern Spain for 4 years!
thanks again,
Angie

Hiya and welcome to poms in oz ,where in spain are you? we had a place just outside Mazzaron about an hour south of alicante. We love Brisbane ,gets a little warmer than spain did but nothing unbearable. The kids have settled well and are enjoying themselves,as Gill said earlier i dont think youll have a problem finding work as a panel beater in most parts of Oz and work wise they are pretty on par with the spanish, lol

I would say Adelaide, Melbourne or Brisbane for Panel-beating work.
Adelaide is probably the most affordable. Melbourne has the best climate, although remember Melbourne has a true winter. Adelaide does too, just not quite as chilly. Melbourne would probably also have the most work to offer out of the three. Finally, Brisbane. Brizzy has the warmest climate. Winter is nice, but Summer is very hot and humid. Plenty of work for Panel-beaters in the Brisbane/Gold Coast regions, but the cost of living is slightly higher.

Hi Cal,
We are in Almeria, just on the outskirts of a town called Albox which has been in the new's recently regarding all the illegal houses & even a demolition!
Mazzaron is about 45 min's away from us, what a small world eh? Did you live there or was it a holiday home?
Thanks Yellow Gecko for the info on the three places, it's good to know there is Panel Beating work available. I will start researching PDQ!
