WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hello there, I am new to this site so if anyone can help me with some information that would be great. My husband and I are curruntly in the process of applying. we have now been told that my husband may have to take an 3-4 hour English test in order to qaulify. Has anyone else sat this test? What was involved?
Hi guys and welcome to PIO, IELTS - has several parts, reading, writing, listening and speaking. We were told we would have to take that as we didn't have enough points, but as OH is dyslexic was pointless, however, our agent siad we should try state sponsorship and that would give us enough points to go independant, so that might be a way for you. Lots of people on here have taken it and passed successfully others have said it's not as easy as it seems. Take a look on the IELTS website they give a few examples of what they will be testing you on. Where are you going? We are going to Victoria. Good luck and hope this helps, and if it doesn't I'm sure they'll be someone on here who can.

Thanks for that. Not sure where we will be able to go. We visited Melbourne last August, really liked Frankston & Mornington. We would also like the idea of Brisbane, however, at the end of the day we go where we can. My husband sounds similar to your OH. Not really confident in having to sit this test. Especially when it comes to writing. Getting really fed up now. Our agents haven't even been able to send in our TRA as they are not sure which Pathway we can go. They have said we should know no later than the 1st July, by then it would be almost a year and nothing has happened.
Hi Helen, tell me more, I can't believe it's been nearly a year for you, so sorry pain in backside eh! Our agent is really good he's been able to find a way for us even tho we thought it might be all over. What does your OH do? OH is a plumber by trade but can do anything to do with building etc apart from gas and electrical. We first thought of going to Adelaide but because we had to go for state sponsorship we had to go to Victoria as SA didn't sponsor plumbers, bummer !

Helen, I'm sure that they can't discriminate against your hubby with his dyslexia - you need to enquire because there may be assistance he can get when doing the test.

Being British, you automatically get 15 points in the points-total because of being native English speakers. The applicant can elect to take the IELTS in oder to try to score an extra ten points.
IELTS is an international organisation because so much of the world uses Engliah. Air-traffic communications between the ground and aircraft are always conducted in English. I do a lot of recreational sailing and English is the international language of the sea as well.
(Hence the one about the British yottie in German waters, howling into the VHF, "Mayday! Mayday! I'm sinking! I'm sinking." Radio pause and then the German Coastguard says cautiously, "Vot are you thinking, Sir?")
The IELTS website is here and if you fish around in it enough, there is at least one test-paper for you to have a look at. There is also a book that you can buy:
I agree with Ali. Get a letter from your GP confirming that Hubby is dyslexic. Make SURE that this is brandished under every relevant nose. There is no way that they do not have a method of dealing with dyslexic candidates fairly.
Meanwhile, it would seem that your Agent is waiting till July 1st to see what (if anything) TRA do about re-introducing Pathway D on that date. In mid-Feb they sent out a circular insisting that a New, Improved Version of Pathway D would be up & running on 1st Juy 2008. (Then again, the first promise was Jan 2008, followed by March 2008, so....)
If you follow the links below, you will discover what has been happening both about Pathway D and about possible ways round it. In an ideal world, I would have lifted the relevant articles by Alan Collett straight off the Go Matilda website but the links to the GM website are not working at the minute:
