Hi Karen,

I have PM'd you back about the Beagles! I meant to say though, I don't know much about the process of getting permission for more than two dogs, apart from that you need to apply to the local area council for where you're moving to, this was told to me by the lady on the WA Gov stand at Leeds Expo. I went looking and found this website, you're probably familiar with it anyway:

If you root around a bit you'll find the relevant act, I did but can't remember how??!

Blimey, £4500? That seems an awful lot, have you shopped around? Also, how long before going do you need to start getting vet stuff sorted at this end, jabs etc? That's going to cost a fair bit too!

We also have a cat but he won't be coming with us, don't like him enough! Not really, he's getting on a bit and I don't think we'd afford another animal, sadly for Gus the dogs have to take priority

Keep me posted how you get on. Do you have a link for your thread?

Hi Nicky, I have PM'd you too.

I have already started the vet process and when the dogs had their vaccinations I ensured that they didn't have leptospyrosis as this is not allowed. I really must start seriously looking at what I need to do - if we suddenly get a buyer for the house Mick isn't going to want to hang around for too long.

Thanks for the link - I printed off the whole Act earlier, some bed time reading for another day.

I sent an email to info.city@cityofperth.wa.gov.au asking for more info on the two dog rule and how to get around it. I got this back:

Hi Nicky,

At present the current regulation states that only 2 dogs per property in the metropolitan area except where a Kennel licence has been granted.

You might like to contact the Western Australian Local Government Association as they might be able to tell you what other councils in the state do.

can anyone help???????????????????????

My partner and I are British Citizens, with jointly owned assets (2 properties in South Africa), looking to sell asap with the hope of immigrating to Perth, Australia, and need advice on the best course of action to guarantee our permanent residency (PR) there.

We should have around £87k if we sell, and hope to invest in AU, with the hope of buying property in Perth, and/or funding a business venture. Our dream for the future would be to start a business of our own, for example, B&B, Backpackers, or a bakery, once PR is established.

We are currently in South Africa trying to sell our properties, but will be based in the UK again hopefully around Sept/October time depending on when/if we sell. We would consider flying to London to sort our visa's as we have been finding it terribly difficult, even to the point of no assistance from migrant agents, merely as we are in South Africa at the moment.

We moved to the UK in 1998 and have spent the last 10 years working in the hospitality/hotel/catering industry, both being promoted and working our way up to manager level, starting from kitchen assistant, commis-chef, waitressing, bar, housekeeping, etc.

We've looked into the various pathways we could take to immigrate and it seems there are a few that would apply to us. However, we want to be certain that the option we choose will be the correct one to ensure our PR in Perth, Australia.

We have looked into (and are not interested in) RSMS visas, as we would by far prefer to return to study as mature overseas students in order to further our careers.

For myself, I have been considering completeing a pastry cooking course, as this is a passion of mine and am very familair in the kitchen with my experience in the hotel industry. I'm aware that being 40 yrs old limits what I'd like to study, as I know that for PR, I need to have completed my studies by the time I'm 45. Given that I am 41 next February and that such a course may take 2-3 years, I'm extremely keen to progress our situation further as soon as viably possible.

I note that the courses I'd need to study start 4th Feb 2009,and the places are limited and I'm not sure how to go about the process and would love some input into the points I've outlined above.

I'm also aware of the TRA who perform assessments on tradesmen who have experience but no qualifications. Is there such a thing for hospitality/hotel/catering for myself, as I have so much experience but hold no paper qualifications. If there is an institution offering as such, please would you be so kind as to give me their contact details. I have references from my employers as I've worked for many years at the same hotel.

My partner is within the age limit to enter Australia on a Working Holiday Visa. It is possible that she may wish to study in the future; if so, how would she go about changing her visa to a student one? Also, if she went in on a Working Holiday Visa, which would only give her two years, would she be able to move onto my visa via defacto/spouse visa if I am studying for three years?
I'm also led to believe that there may be a possibility that she could take a job within the hospitality/hotel/catering industry where she is sponsored whilst on a Working Holiday Visa (I hear this may be possible for some jobs; is this just hearsay?). Would I then be able to go onto her visa as a defacto/spouse, should I need to?

As it is uncertain how long it will take for our properties to sell, we are very wary that immigration laws may change based on the advice or information we hear about.

If our properties don't sell within the time limits we need to act upon, we will rent them out so that we won't have to lose money and time. Also, we are unsure as to how long a visa takes - have heard 6-9months?

If anyone out there can assist us with any of the above points, please let us know...we are totally famished to find out our doorway into Australia!!

Hi and welcome to PIO! As a new member also and not having got very far with our application i've not much in the way of advice i'm afraid!

A good start would be to begin your own thread- your post looks like it took you a while to write so you could copy-past it. By starting your own thread you are getting advice specific to your circumstances and not getting lost in someone else's thread! Just click on thread starter.

Only thing I can advise on is that your estimate for visa application sounds about right- if you apply online. We were at Expo 08 and were advised that paper applications are taking 12-18 mths while online applications are 6-9 months.
Sorry I can't answer anything else- don't have a clue but as I said if you start a thread you'll get a better response.

Good luck with your application, i'll keep my eyes peeled for your thread!

I've just found your post and noticed you wish to take 4 dogs, you have probably got all the info you need by now but if not .... we have three dogs and the two dog rule caught us by surprise too, we have researched it a fair bit now and we know we can keep all three with us, a ranger will come and check our land/yard and decide whether we can keep an extra one.
Here is a reply to us from a lady in Joondalup council :-

Hi Paul & Yvonne
Thank you for your enquiry regarding the keeping of more than 2 dogs. The State Government Law in Western Australia only permits a property to keep 2 dogs, but you may apply to Council for a permit to keep more than 2. Once you arrive you will need to put in writing similar to what I have just received from you, stating that you would like to keep 3 dogs. Once I received your request I then proceed to write to your surrounding neighbours who have 14 days to object the request. If Council receives 2 or more objections the application will be refused. You will have 28 days to ask the Minister for Local Government to intervene and they will make the final decision. Please keep in mind that it is not very often that I have had an application refused. We do not take personal opinions into consideration, for us to consider a neighbours objection it would have to be on the grounds of a barking complaint or fly infestation. I hope I have been of some help to you and not confused you. If you would like to know any further details please do not hesitate to contact me.

Here's another one from Waneroo council

Dear Yvonne

Thank you for your enquiry concerning the keeping of 3 dogs.

Please be advised that an application can be made for an exemption to Council's
local laws to keep more than 2 dogs. This application is to be made in writing
and must include a $100 fee. You will need to do this when you are living in
Carramar as a Ranger will need to visit and assess your property to ensure
means exist to effectively confine the dogs and to ascertain that there is
enough area for your dogs to exercise.

Your immediate adjoining neighbours will also be contacted to ascertain whether
they have any objections to your application. Once the Ranger has provided
his/her report and neighbours have had an opportunity to respond, a report is
then presented to Council requesting that Council grant an exemption to the
City of Wanneroo Animal Local Law made under Section 26(3) of the Dog Act 1976
to keep 3 dogs at your address. This whole process can take up to 6 weeks,
however in the meantime all your dogs are allowed to be kept at your address
until a decision is made by Council.

We also had a couple of quotes for the dogs (one Golden Retriever & two Labs, all big) and for the flight alone it was £2000 each (a few months ago so I am expecting that to change)

Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for your post, it was very helpful (far more helpful than the people I emailed!)
Now all we have to worry about is the neighbours objecting once we've shed a few thousand shipping the little bleeders!
Mine are Beagles and can be pretty noisy........one of my bitch puppies in particular is the ringleader, she starts them all off! We are currently looking into anti barking devices to take with us.

My Chocolate lab (bitch) is the ring leader too, she is taling some training, now I know why you don't see chocolate lab guide dogs
My oh has just bought the book 'the dog whisperer' Cesar ...? somebody or other, he has a show on tv, he's latin American, does wonders on the tv and his book is very informative, it may help with the yappa!

Hi Craig & Nicky, found the name of that book if your interested, it's called "Cesar's Way" and it's author is Cesar Milan, as I said in my last post, it's very informative and down to earth, non of this new age nonsence, he make's you realise where dogs actualy belong in the 'pecking order' of life.

Strangers!

Hi everyone! I haven't been on here for ages...we came to a bit of a standstill and are now wondering which is the best way forward. We now have fewer options open to us due to the current financial climate in the UK.........there are bound to be more of you in the same boat. Selling the house is going to be difficult and while renting it should be quite easy to do, in order to raise enough funds for a property once we land in Oz (if we ever get our visa application in) we're going to have to remortgage which is not looking too promising.

Anyway, Craig has decided that he needs to get out to Oz asap, find a nice place to settle, secure wome work etc. What's the best way of going about this? I mean would we just apply for the same visa we had planned to (skilled independent) or is it better if he tries to get a temporary work visa while we are waiting for our main application to be processed? Totally lost!
