WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hello to everyone at PIO, I am a British Telecoms Engineer with over 10 years experience, just wanted to find out if any other BT Engineers managed to get to OZ, and if so HOW!!!!????? Any advice, contact emails or numbers would be great. I hope to hear from someone soon, so I can start the ball rolling!
Firstly do you have any qualifications, NVQ or such like, or is it all 'in house' stuff.
Mark is a prince2 accredited regional project manager for BT structured cabling. He gained his nvq 2 in the army about 16 yrs ago(telecoms, datacoms and radio), and City &Guilds 3 in Fibre and Data. around 10 yrs ago. So he is able to do his skills assessment. Then we can apply to South Aus, for sponsorship (as general comms tradesperson) because the trade is on their list.
We have recently managed to find a company who want him on board as a project manager, and we actually speak to them again tonight!! Hopefully they will sponsor us, and allow us to go perm straight away!
If you wanted to go this route you could try having a look at the post on here by pee wee, who was looking for similar trades to send him their cv's as there are some positions coming up in the future.

Hi,
I also am a cabling project manager like Mark and have been searching for approximate salaries and job prospects there. Would be very grateful if you could enlighten me with some of your finds. How did you find a prospective employer and what kind of salaries did you find?
Visa is no problem as my wife is a nurse with Australian Citizens as family.
Hi, it is all in-house qualifications, although it is all logged on my work record, every single thing I have done over the years. I will have a look at the general comms person, and see if I qualify, it would have been easier if I were a hairdresser!!! cheers from Stan.

Hi stan+5,
Did you manage to find out anything about your BT job and emigrating?
We are in the same position as my husband does the same but only has in-house qualifications.
All of the agents I have phoned tell me that there is only one type of visa we could apply for and have his skills assessed but the australian government has stopped them temporarily.
I am sure there must be another way to get over there, as BT trained engineers know their stuff!
I'd be grateful if you would let me know how far you have got.

Hi Zoe, no luck yet, get the same from immigration people as you got, but have been told that a new visa will be coming out by the begining of july to replace the one which has been suspended, so keep your fingers crossed this might help us all out, I guess if your hubby is working for BT like mine, he isnt very happy at the moment, no overtime etc, where abouts are you? and where are you hoping to go in Oz?
From Kathryn.
Hi Stan ... im a hairdresser (not bragging honest!) and one of my clients owns a BTLB (think thats right) and one of her employees has just emigrated and is living in perth, im not exactly sure of how they've gone about things but i'll ask her on thurs when i see her next.
Hopefully she'll be able to give me some info that will be of use to you!
Hi, that would be great if you can do that, any info to help us get to oz will be very much appreciated, we just want to get the ball rolling as soon as we can, they must need telecom engineers somewhere in oz, if only I became a hairdresser!! thanks again from Stan, Kathryn and the gang.
