Moving to Adelaide

Hello,

My name is marie, on the 26th May I will be moving to Adelaide with my husband and two girls. We are all from Liverpool, well my husband's a scouser and I come from belfast. It has been two years since we first started the application and finally we have the visa and have just sold our house. Still doesnt seem real yet. Have to say getting a bit nervous, starting to question if we are doing the right thing. The house prices have become so expensive since we first looked into moving to oz. I'm hoping to have a job before I leave, I work as a mental health nurse. My husband works on the railway but is willing to put his hand to anything. I think my husbands biggest worry is leaving his mate and his beloved football, I wont be able to bare him if the reds get to the final of the euro cup. I cant wait moving to a city that makes beautiful wine. Has anyone got any friendly advice as we could do with some right now. We are feeling very confused and I know I have so much to sort out before we leave but I really dont know where to start. Help please !!!!!

Marie

Adelaide

My brother, his wife and family are also moving to Adelaide - they are awaiting the return of their visas from Australian House in London and should be booking flights for the very end of May.

They are proposing to go into a holiday chalet style home for 2-3 weeks and in that time look around for somewhere to rent for six months or so. They have had a few suggestions of areas to go but most people on here say you should take a good look around and see which area suits your needs. We all have different ideas of what is the best place and differing opinions. Some places recommended were Hallett Cove, Aberfoyle Park, Flagstaff HIll, O'Halloran Hill, Reynella, Morphett Vale, Sheidow Park. But what suits one, may not suit the next person..............................

So hopefully you will have the sun shining on you all at the end of May...................... we are hoping to be heading out and joining the fun in May 2009...............still got lots to do in our process.

Best of luck - keep us posted - you will be fine.

Hello Marie

We are hoping to move to Adelaide in Sept. We have family out there in the northern suburbs. We visited them xmas 06 and decided then and there that we wanted to live there. We are going to live in the suburbs but you can live by the sea if you want to. Saying that, nowhere is too far from the sea anyway. The weather is nice, similar to Spain. The people seem to be generally friendly and laid back. Life is different over there but at the same time familiar. You have shopping centre's, resturaunts and pubs. Also, a day out in the Barossa Valley wine tasting is worth the air fare alone( as long as someone else is driving). If you want a good life enviroment for your kids to grow up in, then you're doing them the biggest favour a parent can, ie. sticking your neck out and taking a chance for their future. But also for yourself. You ARE doing the right thing, if you don't try it now you may always regret it. So give yourself a pat on the back for being brave and enjoy your new life. Also, tell him Liverpool are going down hill these days anyway. There's always Adelaide United....

All the best

Darren(Mel's OH).

Hi Marie

Nice to see someone from NI on the forum and you can't go wrong with a Liverpool fan. We are hoping to go to Adelaide in Dec, so it would be good to hear all about your first impressions.

Keep us posted and all the best.

Hi Marie,

As an Adelaide boy who's lived in the UK for more or less 15 years - you'll have a much better life on many different levels. I'm heading back in a couple of weeks having decided over the weekend to move down under - a lot quicker than what you've had to endure.

As a mental health nurse you'll obviously benefit from living near one of the hospitals in the Adelaide metropolitan area. My ex wife was a nurse and while the info may be hopelessly out of date I've always held the belief that the better hospitals were either the Royal Adelaide or Flinders Medical centre. Adelaide is currently booming in certain sectors. An old boss of mine is currently CEO at volunteering SA and said the public sector is screaming out for experienced workers so that might be an option for your hubby. I was told to check out a public sector recruitment site called Locher - that might help.

There are known pockets of poms in either the northern suburubs (these are mostly older people) of Salisbury or Elizabeth where I grew up (I don't recommend this area at all - please avoid) or the slightly better area of Hallet Cove and other southern suburbs. This area has the advantage of superior beaches and easy access to the McLaren Vale wineries. The 'burbs themselves in this areas are a bit ropey- I'm aiming to live as close to the city as possible, preferably the eastern suburbs which, unlike the UK is the default suburub of choice for most Aussie city - nearly every western suburb I know down under has industrial roots.

The city is lovely if not a little dull...that's why I left all those years ago. BUT I did meet a lot of Poms with families who raved about the City of churches as a great place to raise a family - which it most certainly is. Don't worry about the football, there's a strong interest in the premiership all over Australia including Adelaide - you'll just have to get used to watching the game at all hours of the evening and night - or even very early in the morning.

You've made the right choice and getting a place in the short term will be pretty easy - if you get there next month and you're stuck just put up another post and I'll make contact (if you like) to help you out.

Remeber - it's a bit scary now because it's unknown. Adelaide is a very easy city to live in and a great choice...congrats

We're heading for Adelaide aswell (hopefully) late in the year (fingers crossed). For houses, we look on realestate.com.au. We were going to head for Melbourne - Mornington Peninsula area, but one of the reasons for changing destinations was because houses seem to be a lot cheaper in Adelaide. We feel we will comfortably get a really nice home for under £200K and are looking at the moment at the Aldinga area. Spiders...........hope there is not tooooo many. I expect you get used to them though, like everything else.
James's post was really interesting, I know Adelaide is probably the least vibrant city to go to in Australia.....but for us it feels the right place to settle with our family. It's always so valuable to hear from people who have lived there.......post some more James!!
Anyway good luck
