Thanks for all the info Kossy and others. We keep changing our minds about where to go in Oz. Was dead set on Perth for ages. Then thought would go to Melbourne. Now considering Adelaide. Some say its boring but I think it sounds like a great place to bring up kids and the climate like the med sounds ideal.

Hi Marie/gingi

Good luck with your forthcoming move to Adelaide.

We are like yourselves cant make up our minds which state to go to. We are 5 points short of the 120 so looking to go on a regional sponsored visa. OH is in process of doing his ACS so once that is lodged we are going to have to make a firm decision on which state to go to.

At the moment thought waying up the pros and cons of all the states, school fees seems to be an issue at the moment for us as we have three children in secondary school and if we have to pay will be a big chunk out of OH wages.

Whereabouts are you in Liverpool, we are in Aintree.

Good luck again.

Hi Debbie and Stuart,

We live in Aintree too!! Wyresdale Road. We have just booked our flights. Nerves have gone a bit now. We leave 6 weeks on monday cant believe it. Have so much to sort out. From we started our visa application we have considered nearly every city. Robbie (gingi) wanted to go the perth but as time went on we think we have been priced out of perth. Got a job in Queensland but I couldnt settle with the idea of going there cant explain why. Then it was Adelaide's turn, robbie was told it was to quiet so he wanted to go somewhere else so we considered Melbourne but after research the weather didnt seem great and dont want to move to another big city so we went back to the idea of Adelaide and now i have booked the flights there is no going back. Just have to get a job and some short term accommodation and we are sorted. Good luck with your application if I can help with anything please let me know. OH MY GOD......... its really happening.

Hi Marie

You sound exactly like us, bouncing around the regions and having different reasons for not wanting to go to each one.

We are not far from you, we are on Wango Lane. In early stages of our process, only appointed agent yesterday, but OH has to do his Skills assessment, like trying to stick a bomb up his back****. He is wanting to go so much, but I am the one doing all the donkey work, and unfortunately I cannot do the Assessment for him, so I am nagging him to death, he has started it but it is very slow going with him. Anyway he asked the agent yesterday quickest timescale to get us out there and he said if we pull our fingers out could be there in 9 months, realistically though 12 months.

Good luck with you move and if we do end up going to Adelaide, will keep in touch, you will be able to give us ideas of the best places to live, schooling etc.

:)

Firstly - spiders...

Don't panic!

The only nasty spider in Adelaide is the redback spider. It looks like a black widow with a blob of red on it's back. In the WORST CASE SCENARIO it can kill but only the sickly young or the sickly old - and only if you don't get to a hospital quickly. If you get the anti venom you're absolutely fine. I lived in Adelaide from the age of seven to 26, and I never EVER heard of anyone dying from a bite. Be vigilant but don't worry. In fact in some suburbs you just don't get redbacks at all. There are other spiders but they're harmless.

One tip for the newly arrived pom - you'll notice in the supermarkets (Coles and Woolies) that they sell all varieties of insecticide - buy one! When in doubt most sprays will kill all sorts of spiders, flies and cockies (cockroaches) - but there's nothing more effective than a good whack from a shoe!

One suburb of Adelaide that's worth keeping an eye on is Kilburn, north of Adelaide. It's neighbour is the pretty rendy and respectable Prospect with loads of good schools (I should know I went to one of them!). It's not too far from the city centre (about 20-30 minutes by bus) and has most of the services you need.

What am I saying? Unless you live out of the suburban area ALL of the 'burbs have good services.

Another place to look at in the area around Marion - more expensive but has oodles of things to do - it's the heartland of the Adelaide middle classes. Good for families - the mall there is enormous. You'll think you're in the USA!

Hope that helps, if you have specific questions, let me know.

James
Hi James

You mention here that the only spider to worry about in Adelaide is the Red Back. Is the White Tail spider in Adelaide aswell? Just abit worried about this one as Ive read that it goes in your house/clothes etc and with having 2 kids, i'd be forever checking everything.

Thanks

Hi there just a quick bit of advice i think oz in general is very child friendly. I think ou have to weigh up what type of climate you want and of course affordability ie house prices vary from city to city. Thats why we came to Adelaide and dont regret coming here one bit. That does'nt mean to say its easy peasy but its a lovely city with a lot of potential. Our first choice was Perth but feel like we missed the boat on the property market- here is climbing very quickly.
kat.
ps, we moved from Ormskirk only six months ago!

Hi Katz

It's great to know there are so many people willing to help and give advice. This site is great, so helpful. Hope you are having a great time in Oz.

We hope to get our visa over the next few months and get over there ASAP. Kept changing our minds on where to settle but think its likely to be Adelaide. House prices still seem low and like the 'smaller' feel of it compared to Sydney and Melbourne and think Perth may be too hot for us. What is the climate like - does it get to cold in the winter? Do most people have pools and is it too cold to swim alot of the year?

Be great to hear more of your Adelaide experiences and how you're enjoying it.

Susan
