WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Well, what can I say I'm pleased that my thread has been so well received!
:)
Firstly - spiders...
Don't panic!
The only nasty spider in Adelaide is the redback spider. It looks like a black widow with a blob of red on it's back. In the WORST CASE SCENARIO it can kill but only the sickly young or the sickly old - and only if you don't get to a hospital quickly. If you get the anti venom you're absolutely fine. I lived in Adelaide from the age of seven to 26, and I never EVER heard of anyone dying from a bite. Be vigilant but don't worry. In fact in some suburbs you just don't get redbacks at all. There are other spiders but they're harmless.
One tip for the newly arrived pom - you'll notice in the supermarkets (Coles and Woolies) that they sell all varieties of insecticide - buy one! When in doubt most sprays will kill all sorts of spiders, flies and cockies (cockroaches) - but there's nothing more effective than a good whack from a shoe!
One suburb of Adelaide that's worth keeping an eye on is Kilburn, north of Adelaide. It's neighbour is the pretty rendy and respectable Prospect with loads of good schools (I should know I went to one of them!). It's not too far from the city centre (about 20-30 minutes by bus) and has most of the services you need.
What am I saying? Unless you live out of the suburban area ALL of the 'burbs have good services.
Another place to look at in the area around Marion - more expensive but has oodles of things to do - it's the heartland of the Adelaide middle classes. Good for families - the mall there is enormous. You'll think you're in the USA!
Hope that helps, if you have specific questions, let me know.
I want to know James, will you move back to Adelaide????
If you've lived there, you know what it has to offer, will you want to head back there?
Everywhere else is too warm for us, except Melbourne........but as I said before the properties are more expensive and also we want to move to a smaller city. We've never been to Australia, so hopefully we've made the right choice with Adelaide, you just have to go with your gut instincts.
People say the wages are lower there, which is a little worrying for Bradley. Although we will be mortgage free so we won't have to worry about huge out-goings.
I'll have a look at the areas you suggested.....thanks.

I suppose the proof of the pudding is in the eating - and yes, I'm heading back to Adelaide in the very near future - probably no more than a couple of weeks.
As a plumber Bradley won't have a problem getting work. Adelaide was gripped with the same conversation Britain was having a few years back about plumbers - that you can earn £80,000 a year! As we all know it is a bit of a joke but the exact same things were being said in both Adelaide and in the UK. I'm pretty confident he'll find some work.
If it helps a few years ago I was living on $50,000 p.a. (£20k) which in my experience was the equivalent to at least £25k living in Colchester. Look at the salaries and HALVE them, don't do a direct exchange rate...you'll miss out on the higher standard of living out there.
One for the fellas - Adelaide beer like most Aussie stuff is a rather average attempt at lager. Foster's is a regional beer and isn't commonly available in Adelaide. It is also of a poorer quality than what can be bought in England - the stuff we buy here is brewed locally and tastes better. I will buy Foster's in Britain but never in Australia. I do not work for any brewery but I do recommend you give Cooper's Pale Ale a test drink (other beers are available) it's a bit gassy compared to an English ale but at least it tastes like a beer. DO NOT be fooled by a local beer called Southwark Bitter - it's about as much a bitter as I am Dutch (I'm not by the way).
The economy in Adelaide is doing very well thank you very much thanks to the mining...there will be work. Don't worry.
Remember that Adelaide is consistently rated as one of the best five cities in the world for quality of life. It's sublime - and the restaurant scene down Rundle street is very vibrant.
Congrats on your decision - once you settle in you'll love it

My name is marie, on the 26th May I will be moving to Adelaide with my husband and two girls. We are all from Liverpool, well my husband's a scouser and I come from belfast. It has been two years since we first started the application and finally we have the visa and have just sold our house. Still doesnt seem real yet. Have to say getting a bit nervous, starting to question if we are doing the right thing. The house prices have become so expensive since we first looked into moving to oz. I'm hoping to have a job before I leave, I work as a mental health nurse. My husband works on the railway but is willing to put his hand to anything. I think my husbands biggest worry is leaving his mate and his beloved football, I wont be able to bare him if the reds get to the final of the euro cup. I cant wait moving to a city that makes beautiful wine. Has anyone got any friendly advice as we could do with some right now. We are feeling very confused and I know I have so much to sort out before we leave but I really dont know where to start. Help please !!!!!
Marie
Hi Marie
Don't worry you are not making the wrong decision. I have friends who emigrated to Adelaide 3 years ago this Oct. They went with 5 kids and none of them had ever visited Australia before. They are all loving it and have had ups and downs and homesickness and some of the teenage kids took a while to settle. Now they all say they would NEVER return to the UK. I have emailed them today and asked them to join this site so that they can give help and advice as they are in Adelaide. They live in Seaford which looks a really lovely town.
Get a copy of Australia & New Zealand magazine. In the back it has a checklist of what you need to do with 12 months to go, 6 months to go, 3 months to go, etc. and then what to do when you get there. It's really useful. It's a monthly magazine. I have been buying it and even sent off for some back copies.
wishing you the best of luck - make sure you come on here and let us know how you are doing.
Les & Woz
