Researching

Hi Everyone my name is steve from sunny Essex!

Information required please if possible, I have decided to look into moving to oz for a better future all the family, everyone i have spoke to has positive things to say about oz, but what are the negatives.
Wife is not keen so that is my first battle, she had breast cancer 6 years ago now and has been givin the all clear, her concern is will we get medical insurance on her?.
I am going to expo 08 in london to hopefully answer a lot of my questions, we will be hoping for a sponsership in business or management capicity anyone had success in this area?.
I would like to know what the health service is like, standard of living.

regards
steve

Welcome to PiO!

I can't answer some of your questions but i would highly recommend taking your wife to the expo. Maybe they can put to bed some of her fears and answer her questions. Good Luck.

I am not sure what the rules are now about the medicals for the visa but we have friends who were knocked back for a visa because their daughter had had cancer (was about 4 years in remission at the time) - it would be worth checking with some of the knowledgeable people here to see if her previous medical condition would be a barrier. It may be that because she has passed the magical 5 year mark that there wont be an issue.

Apart from that, assuming you do come - the basic medical services are good to excellent for emergency treatment but as soon as you need something elective then the waiting lists are horrible. Medical insurance would consider your wife's previous illness as a pre-existing condition (unless they have the 5 year in remission clause as well) and may not pay out for anything related to that condition for a given period but would cover anything new. Either way, something that serious would be well covered under medicare anyway.

There are all sorts of reasons why people either love it here or they dont. It isnt a panacea for all ills, it is basically another place to live your life in and there are pros and cons. If you want sunshine, sand and surf then generally you will be in luck but if you want people, history and variety then you are probably going to be more disappointed.

Hi Tracey, Expo 08 is on at Olympia Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th April. Ticket entry only. £12.50 each. Just google Expo 08 and it will take you to the site. I'm going with my daughter - she has the skills needed and I have the brother who is an Australia citizen!
