Is the grass greener?

Hello,

I am new to this forum and found it while looking for information on making the move to Australia.

I am a 31 year old plumber/ gas engineer living in Rochester, Kent, England with my wife and 2 children. We have been thinking about moving to Australia, in particular Brisbane, for a while now, but since the birth of our second child back in November we have started doing abit of research.

Are there any members who are plumbers / gas engineers who have made the move, and if so what have there experience been?

Anyone with any advice or suggestions please feel free to share.

S

Sorry...I'm not a Plumber/Gas Fitter but I do know you will find work in the Brisbane/Gold Coast areas! We simply need more Trades people in these housing related fields than we currently have and I think you would find work quite quickly.
This is due to the high percentage of peope moving to SE Queensland to live each day, and the amount of housing beig built rapidly to accomodate them all. Over 30 people make the Gold Coast their new home EVERY DAY!!!
Every week I hear people complain that they are having difficulty getting a "tradey" out to fix something. We simply need more here, and as a result, you Plumbers tend to make good money here on the Gold Coast, especially. The GC has a thriving economy all year round and people are prepared to pay high prices here to to get a quick fix, and also people are getting fed up waiting for "tradeys" to finally arrive to fix these faults.
This clearly says to me that supply is NOT meeting demand.

I don't think the grass is any greener - you'll still encounter every day problems etc., and as Cal says it's hard work those first few months trying to re-establish yourself in a new country.

We're certainly glad that we took the plunge and embarked on a 'new' era so to speak, we love it here in WA and at this point in time, I can't think of living anywhere else.

Hi my partner is a plumber/gas fitter and we took the plunge 7 months ago.
As someone else rightly commented the grass is no greener (although it grows alot bloody quicker here) but we are pleased we have done it.
The first couple of months are very stressful and emotional we could have quite easily of gone back home. Its horrible starting bascially life all over again. We held strong and stayed and we are so glad we did.
It will depend on what you expect from your new life. There is alot of work here but be warned the plumbing is different here. They work really hard for less than you would get in UK. Those jobs you get the labourers to do in the uk are done by the plumber!!! Ie digging of trench for drains etc (bearing in mind the heat) plus the roof plumbing. Alot of work appears to be casual too. My partner is now on job no 3 but luckily this one is permanant. Everyone we have come accross in the industry have been really helpful, no hicupps and you easily fit in.
Some will argue that although you get less wage, living is cheaper to be honest i disagree. In my opnion food shopping here is expensive and the same as the uk. mortgage payments are very high. Yes Petrol is cheaper, but remember you have to pay for all medical/dentist/opticians etc. You even have to pay for the contraceptive pill! All in all we have found that it swings in rounderbouts but by no means the cheaper life style we all think.
When you weigh it up you dont need to be spending money everyday day, weekend or school holidays to keep kids happy. For instance i hear its been snowing in UK, we spent easter in a local park on the beach having a picnic, beer and wine with some other families we have met. The kids had a fish, swim, and play in the park and were so happy. The cost, nothing it all came from the fridge!!! This seems to be the norm here at weekends. So much much more quality time as a family. In my mind the best value for money ever.

Good luck in what ever you decide, but if you can get through the emotional bit it will be the best thing you could ever do for your kids

I came here when I was 18 all I would say is that if you do it , do it when your kids are younger.....I miss england terribly still and am 40 this year. I have seperated from my husband and so have to wait until the kids grow up untill I will then come HOME to live. I love where I live in the Blue Mountains but it is not home. I miss, snow, christmas, hostory, decent tv drama and jus whatever england is I miss. I know it is bllody freezing at times etc etc I dont have rose coloured glasses......but just think very carefully becuae it really all balances out in the end and is the grass greener NO its just different and a little brown.

Sorry, yellow gecko! beg to differ - every time we have asked for a plumber, sparkie etc. they have been there the next day - very competitive. Work has really slowed down on GC to say the least - I have been sub contracting for Boral - one of the biggest plasterboard companies in Oz and for the first time they are struggling to secure contracts! Its not uncommon for tradies to be owed $$$ waiting for their money!! you can't live on sunsine!! We work harder here than in UK as COL is higher! We love the lifestyle BUT think carefully - grass isn't always greener.

Funnily enough - when we were renovating the bathroom the quote we thought was trying to fleece us was from an English Guy who really was taking the Micheal - I would have appreciated it more if he'd been honest and said that he didn't want the work.
