Cool Applying as a painter and decorator

Hi
We are hoping to apply for a permanant using my partners experience as a painter and decorator. He hasn't got any qualifications and we would need to apply using his experience only. Has anyone else applied as a painter and decorator using experience only? Any help would be greatly apprciated.

Hi - as your OH doesn't have any qualifications, you will need to use a pathway that is currently being reviewed by the TRA therefore it has become extremely difficult to get to Aus, just based on skills alone, in fact at the moment it is impossible. Your best bet is to either contact a migration agent or keep an eye on the TRA website for further updates. They are due to make an announcement for pathway D anytime from now until July possibly!

Best of luck Ems x

Question

Hi Jules37,
I have put a few threads on myself about this,my OH is a painter and Decorator and we are wanting to get to Oz as soon as possible, BUT as the last post said if you have no qualifications it does not look good.
Can anybody tell me if you can get sponsorship on this trade without doing the skills with TRA.
Alan if you are reading this can you give us any answers on sponsorships in this trade.
Sorry I cannot be of any help, like you I just keep looking if there is another way in.
Luv Gwen x x x x

I think you will find, you will have to look for employment yourself rather than hoping to find through word of mouth. Probably best bet is to do a search of their yellow pages and make some calls. Ems x

Thanks for the reply Gwen. It is so frustrating when you know that they can do the job but just can't get to prove it.

Unhappy

Hi Jules and Ems
Thanks for that Ems,are you saying if we managed to get an employer to sponsor use we would not need to go down the Tra route.
It is so frustrating when your OH is so skilled in there job,and just because they have not got a piece of paper to say they are qualified does not mean they are not good.

Hello Jules

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

As the others have said, TRA Pathway D would have been the route for you had you started looking into all this 12 months ago.

All is not necessarily lost, however, because the possibilities are as follows:

1. TRA say that Pathway D is to be re-opened (though probably in a re-vamped form) and it would not necessarily be re-introduced for all skilled trades at the same time. The latest from TRA is that they hope to have the new, improved Pathway D up & running by 1st July 2008, but I don't think too many people are holding their breath. Nonetheless, 1st July is not far away now so it is well worth keeping an eye on developments.

2. Get some formal qualifications in the UK, so as to become eligible under TRA Pathway B instead. Much depends on the prospective visa-applicant's age with this option, however.

3. If OH can secure a CRICOS AQF Level III qualification, then he would have the piece of paper needed for TRA Pathway E, which remains open. This involves a Workplace Assessment. There are Australian companies touring the UK, offering to do these assessments (and presumably award the AQF III certificates) in the UK for certain trades. Typically these companies seek to charge £3,500 to £4,000 sterling.

4. A chap called Alan Collett is the boss of a very reputable Migration Agency called Go Matilda. Alan is looking into getting groups of tradesmen together and sending them out to Australia to do the SQF II assessments at TAFEs (the relevant colleges) out in Oz. Alan reckons that this could be done for about half the cost of a similar assessment in the UK.

5. Employer sponsorship, as Gwen has said, might do away with the need for a skills assessment in the short term. However, in the longer term it would be preferable to get a positive skills assessment by one means or another because that would have a significant effect on reducing the waiting time on a temporary employer sponsored visa before a Permanent Residence visa could be sought instead.

For more information about the possible options, I would suggest a call to Go Matilda in Southampton. They do not charge for 15 minutes or so on the phone just to run through the possibilities with you. Please see here:

Best wishes

Hi Gwen - that's as I understand it, if you can get an employer to sponsor you, then the TRA is put off, however if you look at a regional or state sponsorship then you still need the TRA - tell me how frustrating it is!!!!! Been at this since 2006 and previously since 2001, so can appreciate what you are all going through.....we are trying everything possible.

Good luck Ems x

Thanks for all of your help

Hi Gill

Thanks for your advice. We have spoken to Go Matilda and they have advised me to send in our CV's so that they can see what our best option is. Keep everything crossed for us.

Jules
