What's the best visa?

Hi everyone. We're new to the sight. We have decided to try Oz but we're not sure of the best way to go about it. we have been told that a Working Visa is the quickest way and then we can see what we think about Oz. I am 28 a qualified Body Shop Technician and on the list of skills "most wanted". Can anyone help?

Tom and laura

Hi & Welcome to PIO

Working Visa might be the quickest way to get there, but if you are on skilled list at the moment that does not mean that when things change (think it's approx every 6 months), that you will stay on the skilled list. My advise is to strike while the irons hot, pass your skills assessment and get the Visa and if you have the money go on a reccie to see if you like it whilst the process is going through.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

If you are on the skills list, then the 175 is the way to go it will give you permenant residency status from when you arrive.

As kdal says go on holiday if you want to and do a reccie and see what you think.

The 175 is in my opinion the gold medal of visas for those wanting a new life in Australia.

The other options are great of course but they don't give you the benefits and can be more expensive for you in the long run.

good luck...and welcome to PIO

Hi Tom & Laura

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

At this stage in your lives, what are you looking for, please? Have you decided that you want to move to Oz, warts & all, or do you just want to go there, get a general feel for the place and then see what you think after that?

I completely agree with the others that if you are sure about wanting to migrate permanently then the skilled independent subclass 175 visa would be the best option if you can score the points needed (120.)

However, only one of you is a paint-sprayer. Would you and Laura also be able to prove your relationship to the satisfaction of DIAC at this stage so that Laura could migrate as your dependent, Tom? If not, then time in Oz on a WHMV would give that bit time to gel (in DIAC's eyes) and the probability is that you would be able to launch an application for a s/c 175 visa whilst you are in Oz if you decide that you want to settle there permanently.

In this event you would have to go offshore in order for a 175 visa to be granted, but how bad is a week in Fiji or Bali? You would not have to return to the UK for the purpose.

I think that with youth on your side - which you have - you actually hold a heckuva lot of cards in your hands so in your shoes personally I would go for the WHMV option because it could lead to loads of alternatives to the 175 visa (including speed of processing.)

Also, what is the point of a non-working tourist visa if you can make the rekkie visit pay for itself via working in Oz and getting a "real feel" for the place whilst you are about it?

Best wishes

Gill
