Where to start

Hi everyone, first post.

I am 24 years old and have 18 months experience on an I.T. Helpdesk. I did one of the online assessments for an angency and basically on my current level I would qualify for a Regional Visa in the low population areas. The most attractive Territory for me on this visa with my skills is Queensland. Alot of questions on this, firstly how long can the process take and how much is it likely to cost (visa process only I'm talking about)? Also am I right in thinking this Visa lasts for 2 years and then after that I can apply for residency and work where ever? Anyone have any good/bad experiences on this visa? Is it worth going through an agency?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi MFC_STE

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

I know nothing about IT but I do not trust "free on-line assessments" myself. They tend to be based on very general parameters and so not all of them are reliable.

Also, IT seems to be a minefield with lots of different sections to it (none of which mean anything to me.)

For the sake of $50 or so you could get ptlabs (Peter Chiam) to do you a proper skills-appraisal based on your actual experience to date etc. He is a computer-expert as well as a Registered Migration Agent (plus a very nice guy.) His website is here:

Ptlabs Consulting

Having sorted that bit out, Peter would then be able to advise you on your visa options. If whichever visa it boils down to is not one that he deals with himself, he would refer you on to an Agent who does deal with the particular visa involved.

This is how I would set about the process if I were in your shoes.

"Regional Visa" is not specific enough, honey. You could be describing more than one visa. Please see here:

Visa Options – Professionals and other Skilled Migrants – Workers – Visas & Immigration

You might mean the subclass 475 visa, but that seems to be capable of running for 3 years?

You might instead be describing a subclass 457 employer-sponsored temporary visa and be looking for the qualifications/work experience exemption from that? Please see here:

Visa Options - Employer Sponsored Workers - Workers - Visas & Immigration

The qualifications exemption for all 3 of the subclass 457, ENS and RSMS visas is here:

Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 121/856)

It sounds to me like you would be seeking to take advantage of this one:

the position is so unusual or highly specialised that a suitably qualified employee with three years post-qualification experience cannot be found

Presumably the location of the job would make the position suitably "unusual" but since this is not skilled independent migration, you would first need a job offer from an employer who is willing to sponsor you for a visa.

Can you be more specific about which visa has actually been suggested to you, please?

Best wishes

Gill

I would definitely consider Gill's advice. My husband is in IT and it really is a nightmare trying to find our where you "slot in". Hope it all goes well.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I don't have time to check the links out at the minute but will certainly look into Gill's advice.
