When Should I apply

Hi,

I have a general question I hop someon can answer. I am currently studying towards becoming an accountant (just about to start CIMA) and my wife is studying to become a Midwife (2 years to go for us both).. When should be start the application process as I am aware that you need at least 12 months experience in your chosen field if the skill you have is wanted. The reason I ask is that some visas eem to take 2 years etc to go through.....

Please Help

Kevin

I don't know about midwifery but I have just sat TOPCIMA this week. Whilst I wait for my results I'm going to get my experience signed off and apply for membership so hopefully I'll get this not long after the results come out (assuming I pass that is). You will need at least a years post qualified experience so I won't be able to apply until a year after I get my CIMA membership through.

Unfortunately I turn 30 this year so lose some points there and unless I wait until I have 3 years post qualified experience I won't have enough points to apply. I'll be sitting the IELTS tests to prove I am proficient in English to get my score up while accumulating a years experience.

Hope that helps

Vicky

Hi Kevin

In your shoes, I would consult Alan Collett of Go Matilda because he is a Chartered Accountant in both jurisdictions as well as a Registered Migration Agent.

Never having been anywhere near accountancy myself, I have no idea what the pre-qualification training period involves. However, Alan comments regularly that a fledgling accountant's training frequently involves doing the same job as s/he will do once qualified and that sometimes it is possible to convince DIAC and the skills-people that this work experience should be taken into account.

That is all I know about it, but you can conact Alan in a variety of ways. You can pm him via Poms in Oz, or you can e-mail him on alan@gomatilda.com

Alternatively, he is in Melbourne so you can contact him by phone if you prefer. Please see this link:

Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - Contact and Feedback

Best wishes

Gill

Hi Kevin

Im in the same boat as u only its ACCA. I have had mixed responses re sitting exams first or going as a graduate. From my research so far i found that u can go as u say 12m post professional qual (sometimes a bit before if u convince the DIAC u have been carrying out the role of a ca during ur study)

I also found out that if u have a degree in accounts (which i do), u may be accepted if u have 12m experience and your degree matches that of the ozzy one (9 out of 12 of the criteria/subject areas) Check out Chartered Accountants - Number One In Numbers, Homepage

There is also the sposor route if u cant wait to get there

GOOD LUCK!!!!
