Completely new to this...

Emigration and Oz combined!

Hi, I'm Kev (or Rooster - won't be offended), my other half is Emma and we've 2 kids aged 11 and 6.

Without going into too much detail here (plenty of time for that later) we've decided we need to do something about our ideas of living somewhere else other than England. We've looked at elsewhere in Europe, and other than the obvious language issues, there would still be the same "political" issues due to the EU and (IMO) it's "nanny state" approach.

This brings us to looking at Oz or NZ, and a mate of mine who's well down the track with his visa (and sister lives in Sydney), suggested coming on here as a starting point.

As I said at the top, we're new to this, but far from naive. Oz is a little bit different from being the UK with sunshine. In terms of looking for somewhere else, we're realistic enough to know there are no easy rides anywhere, and that even getting into Oz will be a hard slog, but you gotta start somewhere...

This site looks to be a mine of information, so we'll have a good look round and we'll no doubt ask to pick your brains if that's OK by you lot?

For the record, Emma is a secondary school teacher who's climbing the ladder fairly quickly. I'm (20 years ago) apprentice served HNC qualified mech/elec engineer and also have a degree in Economics. I've got many years experience both on the tools and in production/manufacturing management, plus operational management in the public sector, and now working as a Sales Manager with experience in the service sector and latterly the packaging industry. The kids are bright and sporty (hence Oz's appeal).

We live in Rotherham in South Yorkshire, so feel free to say hello if you're nearby!

We've got the points on my OH background, so really it's a matter of deciding where/how we want to go, making sure we get the process right to get in, what to do when there etc.

Anything of worth would be very much appreciated, Cheers!

Hi , welcome to PIO. We are in Doncaster, so just down the road from you!!
If you have no set ideas about where you want to be, why not research the job situation on sites such as SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site and Job Search - Australian jobs - Job listing - Find a job - CareerOne to start with. Then look at housing/schools/climate etc; that might help narrow things down further for you.
Theres a heap of information available from the guys on this site - I've always found someone who knows the answer (even to the really daft questions!!)
You've obviously got an idea that you should qualify with enough points - I found talking to a few agents really helped us at the beginning - they all will be happy to give you 15-20mins free on the phone and it can help to make the process a lot clearer, even if you decide not to use an agent in the end. Go Matilda and Ian Harrop have a really good reputation on here, so that might be a good starting point.

Anyway, hope that helps for starters! Let us know how you get on; I'm sure you will find that this site becomes additive after a few days, so I'm sure we will see a lot more of you on here!!

Cheers, lots to learn, just been looking at stuff over on the immi.gov site to find out about the various visas and stuff. We've got 120 (OH) and 115 (me) points without any job offers, so we're just about there on that score. It seems to be a chicken and egg situation though, a job offer would nail it for either of us, but we can't go chasing jobs without having the necessary clearance because I doubt any sane employer would wait for months! Any tips on that first of all?

Hi,
general consensus of opinion seems to be that, if at all possible, get a permanent visa rather than a sponsership one. you will have a lot more security in the long term. however, its a personal choice on that one.
our aim is to get to the point of having (or almost having) our visas (hopefully, of course!) and then start the search for work, either through internet, acquaintainces out there or a reccie trip.
At the moment we are just getting through the early stages of application, so trying not to think that far in advance, otherwise would be in danger of brain-overload!!

That seems to be a sensible approach on both counts. As I understand it, sponsorship could also be dodgy if the job ends up being crap!

Looking at your second point, getting the visa and then the job would appear to be a good way round, although I'd be worried about running out of time somewhere along the way, have I got it right that you are limited in terms of the medical and other elements? It took me 6 months to land my current job in England last time I changed, and the OH has been looking for over a year!

Bit of a quick update

The OH suddenly got an interview that would have meant a significant pay rise and would have been a good opportunity to move somewhere in the UK we hadn't considered before......

She didn't get the job. We're now back considering our options and this one obviously is pretty high on the list once more...
