Hello everyone

Hello everybody my name is Jack and Im 21 years old and an Approved Electrician. I am hoping to migrate to Oz as soon as possible, I will be on my own ( very scary) altho I do have relatives out there. I havent really done much apart from register with a few websites and taken an online points test which I passed. I really dont like britain and dont want to live here much longer. Any help and advice on what to do next would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Presume you will be going on a skilled visa? If so you need to get your skills assessed by Vetassess - website is VETASSESS - Vocational Education Training and Assessment Services. Once that has been done you can apply for visa - look at the DIAC website for forms and advice Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

This should be enough to get you started, this site is really helpful so if you get stuck, just put a post on here and I am sure someone will point you in the right direction.

Good luck

Hi Jack
Welcome to PIO!
We are from Morecambe originally too and I can assure you there is a whole lot of "Morecambrians" OUT THERE living in Sydney (and East Suburbs) who have "been there, done that, bought the T-Shirt" etc etc! We ARE a little (well quite a bit) older than you but NOT THAT PAST IT! LolSeriously though............We don't "know it all" BUT you only have to know just ONE person to make it work in a big wide world and the rest will take care of itself! Guaranteed!
IF we can help in any way then please give us a shout!
All the best

Thanks everyone for the help and encouragement. As for the online skills assesment with VETASSESS there doesnt seem to be a job for electricians or other trades fpr that matter there. The website for tradespeople doesnt seem to be working yet - http://www.tradeassess.com.au . Hi Bernie, I was wondering if you could tell me how hard it is getting your electrical qualifications recognised in oz and is it true they have changed or are in the process of changing the way trades are assesed? Also are all my qualifications basicly worthless over there? I completed an apprenticeship in electrical egineering, have passed my 2391 testing and inspecting and i am taking my 17th edition exam tommorow, is this all a waste of time and money? Any advice would be apprecaited thanks

Hello Jack

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

The MODL is the list of occupations in greatest demand in Australia at present, so the first step is to look at the MODL, which is here:

Is your occupation in demand? - Workers - Visas & Immigration

There are two electrical trades listed, so next you go here:

A-Z Occupations List - Australian Skills Recognition Information

Match up the Job Title, Code etc and see whether you think you would qualify under either of the MODL categories.

If not, fear not because it is not essential to have a skill which is on the MODL in order to migrate to Oz.

Have a good trawl through the ASRI list and see what you think from that would fit your skills, qualifications and experience to date.

Have a look at the DIAC website as well:

Workers - Visas & Immigration

Information Booklets - Applications & Forms - Visas & Immigration

Don't worry too much about the intricacies of Vetassess for the moment, I'd say. Get a "feel" for the whole business of migration first.

I would also suggest that you should ring up two firms of Registered Migration Agents. The first is Go Matilda in Southampton:

Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - Contact and Feedback

The other is Ian Harrop & Associates near Oxford:

Registered Australian Migration Agents, UK - Ian Harrop and Associates

If you ring Ian Harrop, use the Burford number and ask for Tony Coates or Ian Harrop.

Both of the firms above will be happy to chat with you on the phone for 15 minutes or so, at no cost to you and with no obligation on your part to go any further with them. They can give you a pretty good steer in just 15 minutes, you would find, which saves a huge amoung of head-banging on your own!

Best wishes

Gill
