Hi
My husband is an electrician too. We have a friend who emigrated 3 years ago and took the test. It said it was fairly easy just went to college for a few weeks, had to buy a book and then took the test. I think you can take it in UK before you emigrate which is what we are hoping to do but haven't made any enquiries ourselves as yet.

Hi Lez & Woz,you can do the trade test in the UK now,it is done in either Birmingham or London and over seen by a company called "Vetassess",or if you want to visit the website www.vetassess.com.au,i am very nervous although i have had quite a good range of electrical experience and feel ok apart from the maths wich a good freind sparky has offered free tuition ( with a few beers as currency)to brush up on certain things, mine was booked by our immigration lawyers in brisbane and they have a great team who do all the applications for us although at $600 for the first skills assessment and $1600 for the trade test its not cheap so theres a bit of pressure on.
hi there, i am completely new to this site and in a similar situation to yourself!! my name is gareth by the way!
i am a qualified motor mechanic, but have been working as a sparky for the last 4yrs but purely on a practical basis. I now have 16th edition(soon to take 17th if it"s worth it?!!),EAL domestic installer and 2377,and am currently at college doing the dreaded evening classes to get 2330 C&G.
I too am worried about the TRA, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
I need to escape the madness!!

Hi Gareth
I have got through TRA OK as I served a 7 year apprenticeship and have been an electrician all my life. I still have to get a licence to work as a self employed sparky in Oz and have to sit a test to get that. I am hoping I can do that in UK but haven't found out how to go about that just yet.
Are you using an agent?

Hi Gareth, people are telling me it will be ok and i have a mate who does all our inspection and testing who is gunna come round and put me through the ropes,i have 16th also and parts I,II,III city & Guilds in electrical installation,i did mine at niight school witch is bloody hard work when your working all day,i understand that they only assess you on the experience that you have accumulated to date that is why you fill them forms in when you have all your qaulifications and certificates submitted to vetassess, well i certainly hope so,iam not short of experience but just dont like practical exams.
Cheers Mate, nice to speek to other victims in the same situation as us,how frustrating is this waiting and waiting, well just waiting for my trade test date and we finally feel as tho were getting somewhere, our mates have just returned to adelaide after a quick 2 week trip, they have been there 2 years and originally thats were we wanted to go untill a trip there last april wich made my mind up that we wanted to be further across to the coast so were hoping to go to the gold coast, pasific pines area,is there anyone on the forum that is living in that area,my wife is doing her homework but speaking to someone in the know is better.......Cheers Guys
i'm in much the same position as you,i'm a 39 yo sparkie hoping to move to the gold coast and hoping to sit the vettasses test in april, just got references back from previous employers and agent says i'm cutting it close for getting the application in for aprils tests,i've been a spark since i served my time in the late 80's so the practical side should be ok but i'm a bit worried about the written tests as its been a few years since i was at college ,theory's,equations, calculations its all a bit fuzzy now

hi easter, lez and woz,and all, cheers for the advice.
im completely frustrating myself at the moment!! having just got married me and my good lady are looking to make the big move as soon as, but im bound entirely by the actual paper qualifications.
Having 4 years experience as a sparky, and only having half of the necessary quals is becoming a nightmare!
as far as i can see, i will need to complete my c&g level 2 (which im doing at the mo) and then level 3, just to be eligable to apply for the TRA,this alone im looking at another yr and a half in just college time, and then the whole visa process! nightmare, am i correct in thinking this?
my saving grace may be that i am a fully qualified motor mechanic to c&g level 3, and nvq level 3,im thinking it may be quicker to apply on this trade, does it apply to all skilled trades with regards to the TRA? ....and do you have to work in this trade when you get out there,im prepared to go back to college to do necessary quals for oz licence.
apologies for all the questions guys, its not that i"ve not done my research... i am just slightly impatient as you can prob tell!!
im not using an agent just yet lez and woz, so and recommendations much appreciated!
great website, and eveyone is very helpfull.... happy days!
