Moving next year to Melbourne - advice on areas!

Hi! This is my first post! I am hoping to move from UK to Melbourne next year, with my husband who is Australian (Perth), and our 2 teenage daughters. We don't know how to find out if particular suburbs are "nice" - is Melton nice? or St.Albans? We intend to rent for a couple of months, but don't know if people rent for short periods like that ... any advice would be great!!!!!!
