Let's get the intro out the way

Hi everyone. I have been looking over the site for several hours to get the gist of what it's all about and I will definitely be a regular here so I may as well introduce my family. There's me, my husband Stuart and our 17yr old son Samuel. We are just getting serious about moving to Adelaide. My husband has wanted to move to Oz for many years and I have resisted due to family ties but my sister's husband has also wanted to live in Oz since forever and they have got their visas and will be leaving here in May to live in Victoria.

I know that's still a distance from Adelaide but it's closer than UK and we already have several connections in Adelaide via the British Superbikes championships as we have sponsored a lot of upcoming Australian riders.

I am getting my head around the whole thing now but I am worried about work. I have a law degree and passed the Legal Practice Course here but have not yet qualified as a solicitor. I may now have the opportunity to do this but have heard I would have to redo it in OZ. Does anyone know anything about getting qualified as a solicitor there?

Other than that I would just like to say Hi and keep posting. It's all good!!!

Hi Valerie,

Welcome to PIO's. I also have UK law degree and have completed the BVC but not yet pupillage although this may well be happening now - talk about timing - but anyway in regards to your question about Ozzie law - you need to contact the state in which you wish to practice, their legal admissions board will access your qualifications and indicate what extra study you need to do as far as I know it looks like it is Ozzie Constitutional law which you can do here through the College of Law in the UK (they have a college in Sydney) a bit expensive though if my memory serves me. Each state is slightly different which is why I suggest you contact them directly.

This website might be helpful to you. Haven't read the whole thing myself but see what you think.

Hope this goes some way to answering some of your questions. How does Samuel feel about leaving - my son is nearly 16 just getting ready for his GCSEs which you son will have already completed and was wondering what his thoughts were on it.

If I can be of any further help just send me a PM as am more than happy to help and it will be nice to have another legal person to work through the piles of info relating to this profession - absolute nightmare at times.

Nikci
