Lightbulb Minds made up

Thats it thanks everyone. We are going to go to the expo in Liverpool next week.
Should we have a list of questions with us incase we get to speak to someone?(I know that sound like a silly question). We are going to ring Go Matilda as you all seem to think they are 1 of the best.
Son has been looking into getting own visa ! and sponsor as he is a chef, never seen him so hype about anything. So I guess we have made a good decision even if it means he goes over there first then we follow.
Has anyone found it harder to get visa cos of the age thing? We are both nearly 49 so does that really go against you?MUST just say this sight is amazing and you can find just about anything on it .

hi guys, welcome to pio! your son could have a look on seek.com for chef jobs, will be loads on there. also have a look at immi.gov.au, i think it may be harder to get visas because of your age, as far as i'm aware you have to be under 45. but not 100% sure,
goodluck,
sheena

Unhappy Depressed

Well we went to expo and they where not very helpfull.Son can get visa easy but we were told that TO OLDand we should wait till son been out 2yrs then we could apply to join him on extended family visa. Husband not a happy bunny to say the least. So we going to try New Zealand as there age cut off is 55yrs.Have been and it is a beautiful country but WANTED to go to Aus.Why if you have careers and money to suport yourselves and jobs that are needed is age such a big thing .
Sorry didn't meen to moan.

Damn, sorry to hear that!!
I think a lot of these expos aren't helpful at all :(
NZ is still a great place. If you get a family VISA, I *think* there's a 9-year long-haul option which means you'd be there for 9 years until they processed your VISA etc... but you'd still have to pass the health check at the end of the 9 years.
Best of luck :)

Hi Pauline & Dave

Please slow down a little, huns.

It sounds to me like the situation wasn't explained to you very well but the advice you were given was actually quite sensible, I reckon. Some firms would have tried to flog you an immediate Student Visa without even suggesting that you should wait and obtain a Contributory Parent visa instead.

Do either of you have any children apart from the son you have mentioned? This includes any children from previous relationships that either of you may have had. If your son is the only child that either of you has then you would become eligible for a Contributory Parent visa and you would not necessarily have to wait until your son has been living in Oz for 2 years before you could apply.

The thing about the CPV is that it gives you unlimited work-rights in Australia from Day One, plus full access to Medicare (the Oz equivalent of the NHS, though it is not a clone of the NHS.)

At the end of the day it would not actually cost you significantly more than a likely-to-be-futile Student Visa would be likely to cost you one way and another.

I would recommend that you telephone both Go Matilda and Ian Harrop Associates. Both firms would be happy to chat to you on the phone for 15 minutes or so, for free and with no obligation on your part.

I suspect that the Agents and DIAC staff at the expos are rushed off their feet and do not have time to sit down properly with somebody and explain things to them fully.

I realy would suggest that you speak with both firms before you go into the idea of moving to NZ instead. The Contact details are below:

Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - Contact and Feedback (Use the Southampton number)

Registered Australian Migration Agents, UK - Ian Harrop and Associates (Use the Oxford number)

Best wishes

Gill
