Hi Pauline & Dave
Please slow down a little, huns.
It sounds to me like the situation wasn't explained to you very well but the advice you were given was actually quite sensible, I reckon. Some firms would have tried to flog you an immediate Student Visa without even suggesting that you should wait and obtain a Contributory Parent visa instead.
Do either of you have any children apart from the son you have mentioned? This includes any children from previous relationships that either of you may have had. If your son is the only child that either of you has then you would become eligible for a Contributory Parent visa and you would not necessarily have to wait until your son has been living in Oz for 2 years before you could apply.
The thing about the CPV is that it gives you unlimited work-rights in Australia from Day One, plus full access to Medicare (the Oz equivalent of the NHS, though it is not a clone of the NHS.)
At the end of the day it would not actually cost you significantly more than a likely-to-be-futile Student Visa would be likely to cost you one way and another.
I would recommend that you telephone both Go Matilda and Ian Harrop Associates. Both firms would be happy to chat to you on the phone for 15 minutes or so, for free and with no obligation on your part.
I suspect that the Agents and DIAC staff at the expos are rushed off their feet and do not have time to sit down properly with somebody and explain things to them fully.
I realy would suggest that you speak with both firms before you go into the idea of moving to NZ instead. The Contact details are below:
Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - Contact and Feedback (Use the Southampton number)
Registered Australian Migration Agents, UK - Ian Harrop and Associates (Use the Oxford number)
Best wishes
