Little bit of advice needed!!

I was just wondering how the health care works out in australia? Do you have to pay money every month? how much is it normally or does it depend?

Medicare contributions are taken out at the same time as your tax - works out to be 1.5% of your taxable income. There is a surcharge of a further 1% if you dont have private medical insurance and earn over a certain limit.

As far as doctors visits go, you can find doctors who bulk bill but they are usually in medical centres and you dont necessarily get continuity of care from one GP - bulk billing means that the doctor bills Medicare directly and you pay nothing. Most GPs dont bulk bill and you pay the fee after the consult - usually about $50 then you take the receipt to the Medicare office and get a refund of about $30 from them so you are about $20 out of pocket for each consultation. If you need to be seen in hospital, then medical attention is free.

I recenlty went to see the doctor - it was $57 for the consult, blood tests were bulk billed. This is only the 2nd time though that I've been to the drs., hubby been only twice (after a crash) and the kids not at all.. Our surgery bulk bills for children and older adults.
