Bricklayer, but no college quals. please advise

Hi there,

We have been thinking about moving to australia for a few years but are now ready to get the ball moving, my partner has been a bricklayer for the last 12 years, but doesnt have paper qualifications, like going to college and doing the course, he was trained on site and has been doing professional brickwork since he was 19, he is now 33, to anyone that has moved to aus or is applying, do you know if you need paperwork to back up your work?

Any advise would be great, because if so then he can enroll in a part time course for 2 years but it means we wouldnt have wasted filling in the application first before hand.

Thank you in advance to any help

I gather there is plenty of work for bricklayers, so maybe you could look at the sponsorship route. Best bet would be to talk to an agent though. Try gomatilda.com or Australian Migration | A Registered Agent (they have a UK office). It shouldn't cost you anything and they can advise you on what options there are.
Best of luck,
Cara

PS: Welcome to PIO!

Wow thanks for the quick reply, he has a friend who works as a bricklayer out in perth and says they are always looking for people. but his friend had college qualifications,

So perhaps sponsorship would be good idea, just looking at all the options avaliable.
Thank you again for your reply

Hi bambam

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

It is not crusial to have formal qualifictions in bricklaying in order to get aan employer-sponsored visa as a bricklayer.

However, without the formal qualifications it is not possible to obtain a positive skills assessment. Without the skills assessment, the only route to eventual PR would be to spend 2 years on a temporary subclass 457 visa first.

Because the s/c 457 visa only grants Temporary Residence in Oz, 457 visa holders are excluded from a lot of "perks" which Permanent Residents can take for granted.

Please see this article by Alan Collett of Go Matilda:

Go Matilda - Your Gateway to Australia - News

Study both the article and the links contained in it carefully and thoroughly, I suggest.

At 33, Hubby would have plenty of time in which to get the necessaru formal qualifications etc before considering applying for a visa. If he gets the qualifications etc in the UK, he would have a wider range of visa-options at the end of the day.

Best wishes

Gill
