Unhappy I'm in need of advise !!!!

My husband and I are hoping to move to AU, we came over last year and stayed with friends and fell in love with the life, hubby is an HGV1 driver, which I know is not on the SOL, he is looking to retrain as an Electrician, he has worked for a mate on and off for the last 5 years helping him out with the overflow of jobs but he has never taken any qualifications, we have been told that he can take an assessment which will cost $1500, but we are not sure if this info is correct, we keep being told different things so we are really confused.
Can someone throw some light onto this, and if he takes a crash electricians course, to what level does he need to qualify.

Thanks, a very confused Sara x

HI Sara, I dont think that the information that you have is correct , but I could be wrong. I think it is x amount of years in the job plus the qualifications. Things changed in September and not sure on all the new rules but someone on here will know so thought I would answer you to bump your thread back up.

Why dont you call an agent as they do give some free advise over the telephone and then you will know where you stand.

Good luck Kim

Hi Sara

I'm doubtful, like Kim. There used to be a way in for people who had learned a trade "on the tools" but had no formal qualifications in the field. This was known as TRA Pathway D and it was closed a few months ago. The Australian Government is said to be looking for new ways to bring it back in some form, but nothing has happeend about that yet.

However, I have read (on the Thinking Australia forum) that TA managed to get somebody a 457 Employer Sponsored visa as an HGV1 driver last year.

South Australia, in particular, is crying out for truck drivers apparently. A 457 is a temporary visa but if the person with the skill cannot be recruited any other way, then it seems that the skill does not necessarily have to be on any of the lists.

After 2 years on the 457 visa, if employer and employee both agree, the employer could nominate the truckie for an ENS visa, which gives Permanent Residence. In some cases, an RSMS visa may also be possible.

I think I'd be inclined to contact Darrell Todd of Thinking Australia and find out from him what he thinks the chances are of TA being able to find a sponsor for Hubby based on his truck driving.

Try here, I sugest:

Work in Australia, migrate to Australia

Hmmm - their Home Page is singing quite a nice rendition of Waltzing Matilda to me as I type this, by the way!

Cheers

Gill

I'm not sure, but I seem to remember a thread on here about HGV drivers and someone based in Perth saying he could find work for anyone applying. Gill, (who has a much better memory than me), or someone else may recall who it was. Failing that, a scan through all likely threads may well reveal who it was. If I manage to find it I will post the info.

Good luck,
Eric.
