Should we apply now or wait ?

Hi all,

Pretty new to this site and already got answer's to a few of the questions that keep popping up in my head and would like an answer to, I feel mind blown already only been a member 3 days. Very good site indeed and everyone is in the same boat and very friendly and helpful...

My next question if anyone can help is...

My husband is wanting to finish a college course before we start applying which doesnt finish till May 2009. Im saying we need to get the ball rolling now. He should be qualified under the skills wanted list (at the moment) so should be no problems as such with our application but confused as to wait or start applying now?
Once youve been accepted how long have you got before you have to go etc?
my son is sat with me, wanted to put these on!!!!!

Hi
If you think you qualify now then I'd apply now as things can change. I've been speaking to an agent who said he's had people delay applying and then their occupation has been taken off the skills list and they didn't qualify anymore. (I imagine it might have been agent talk but at the same time it is possible) From what I can gather, unless you have an occupation in demand where your visa perhaps goes through faster, it can take up to, and even longer then 12 months from start to finish - although this obviously depends from person to person. You then generally have 12 months (from when your medicals and police checks were issued I think) to go into Oz and validate your visa. You don't have to move over there at this point, but all members of the family on the visa have to go into the country to validate. You could then come back if you wanted to for a while before being ready to move.
Hope this makes sense and helps?!

im pretty sure once your visa is validated you have up to 5 yrs to actually move out permantly, you have to live here 4 years before you can then apply for citizenship ,hope this helps a bit

I would say get the ball rolling now

The emgation requirements can change at short notice.

Your circumstances can change
I delayed applying several years ago

Only to get caught out on the rule
Out of trade for more than six months!
(The company I worked for went bankrupt).

And I only just got in on the second attempt.

I dont see any benefits to waiting another 12 months to apply.... it makes sense to me to get the ball rolling now... after all if you are one of the lucky ones who gets through quickly there are many ways to "slow things down a bit" apply for medicals ... apply for police checks and take your time with each of them ..... as said before trade lists can change as can the cost of the visa application ... and as already said once accepted I also think you have up to five years before you make the permanent move!

Good Luck with all you need to do .... see you in Oz!

Plus, ........ if like us it takes about 5 months worth of paper work to-ing & fro-ing emails back and forth b4 we could pin down what visa we could apply for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then you may as well get started.!!

MY OH's job was on the MODL (Migration Occupation in Demand list), but even though we were supposedly fast tracked, it still took a year from getting the trade recognised to getting the visa. We did slow things down a little by waiting for the medical and police check request. By the time we get there, it will have been nearly 2 years since we started things moving.

Just one thought occurs to me though. You mentioned your husband is finishing a college course which will give him the qualifications needed for emigration. I'm not familiar with all the visas, but I know some of them require that you have a year's full time work experience in the job which you are applying under. You may want to just get some advice on that, either from an agent, or someone who knows more about the various visas. Gill (username Gollywobbler) may know a bit more about it and is an incredibly lovely, selfless lady to boot.

Best of luck whatever you decide,
Cara
