A Few tips

Hi everyone,

I have lived in Oz since 1978, and I thought that newcomers might like a few tips. Here they are.

1. If you are asked to bring a plate to a function. Its not (as I thought) because they are short of plates. It means you are supposed to bring something on a plate. i.e sandwiches, cake. etc.

2. When asked to a BBQ ask what they would like you to bring, its usually a salad or somehting for dessert.

3. If asked around for a drink, make sure to bring your own drink.

4.When leaving and person says see you later, this doesnt mean they will be coming back, (as my friend thought and made tea) its a form of goodbye.

3. If your going to rent a house and you will be there in the summer. Make sure it has Air conditioning. Many people like myself can't take the really hot days and air conditioning is a god send.

4.Before you buy or rent a house, ask friends at work etc about the area, they will know where not to go.

5. You will have periods of home sickness and a little thing can start it off. A song, something on TV but you do get over it. A Dutchman told me when I first arrived that it takes 5 years to settle and I think he was right.

6. Be prepared to be a taxi at weekends taking your children to sports practice of every kind, but the good thing is you will meet other parents and make friends.

7. Ask people around to your place and you will start making friends.

Thats all I can think of just now. If I can help anyone just let me know and good luck to you all.

Celia

HA! HA! HA! HA! ....cant help laughing at the "bring a plate" one coz I would have just brought a few plates (empty) with me and thought how trusting I was not to have made them paper ones!

Thanks for the tips though.... keep them coming if you think of anymore!
