I have recently returned to Australia after working in the UK for five years and I have also dragged back a UK partner. We're a gay couple so can't answer your questions re Centrelink but no doubt someone will be able to help.

It has taken some readjustment. Thinks I like are that post office queues seem to have disappeared and when I telephone a bank/government dept I actually get to speak to someone who knows what they're doing and are able to solve the problem (maybe I've just been lucky).

However I seem to have unwittingly fallen into the ready meal trap in the UK and I have found that meal preparation seems to be a bit more involved than when I left!

I'm also working half an hour longer each day but it does seem a lot more laid back, but that may just be the firm that I'm working for.

I've noticed a lot more sunshine and a lot more places to just sit and enjoy it without crowds, I can get a table outside at a cafe at lunch time (what's with that??).

Traffic seems much lighter and weekends actually feel like weekends. Despite living in a built up area, on Sundays I can here the train (1.2km away) tooting its horn.

Having said that I miss country pubs and the greenery and having Europe on my doorstep, but then again there are plenty of places here to visit.

I think that you'll find that you look at Australia in a different light depending on how long you have been away.

Hi ... BritsAbroad married to an Ozzie, we are going back to Sydney in august, John has lived here for nearly 10 years and although he has loved living here he is looking forward to "going home"

Let me know how your plans go Donna, how soon are hoping to get out there with the baby due in July?

dwaldron - your post really made me smile especially the bit about ready meals and weekends certainly do feel like weekends. Hubby and I both work full time so it's an 80 hour fortnight but we then get an accrued day off a month (which I save up and have a few days off at once).

How has your partner settled in to Oz and do they like it?

Ali
