My boyfriend Paul and I could be moving to Townsville too... he is being sponsored by an employer (he's a chiropractor) and we think that we could be moving in the 2nd week of May this year.
Reading all the mixed opinions on this website about what Townsville is like had got us a bit nervous!
I just thought I would email and say hello as it sounds as though we are in the same boat.... (especially as your profile says that you live in Portsmouth and we do to - in Fratton).
hi laura, wow what a small world.
to us, and what we've read about townsville sounds a good place as any to start our new life, away from pompey. what we've heard is that townsville is an up and coming place for young people like yourself and partner. is there work for you as well as paul?

Thanks guys! We are going out on Paul's sposnorship, once we have a date for leaving I will put my cv online and start applying. Do you have any employment organised yet? I really hope Townsville is a good place for us to move. We were reading that we won't be going in the sea very much with all the box jelly fish and tiger sharks.. oh well..
hi you thanks for getting back to us. i know the jelly fish and the tiger sharks the spiders, the snacks, the cane toads, the mosqutoes and the squarking birds all sound a bit of a downer, but hay what a great new life to look forward to. 300 days of sunshine ( we hope) and no more cold and gray days. does that make townsville sound better? we are hoping to be ther in march.
from the milton massive

Hi all,
I can only say that I have visited Townsville (on holiday 4 times) and I suppose it is down to taste.I have been all around Australia and visited a lot of beautiful cities that Oz has to offer. Yes there are cane toads, spiders, snakes, crocodiles, box jellyfish and mozzies. The summers are bloody hot, humid and sometimes unbearable but the winters are gorgeous and sunny. The great Barrier reef is just on your doorstep and in my mind there is no comparison to a cold Lancashire winter. The only thing is finding a decent suburb to live (as it is in most cities).I am willing to risk taking my two children of 11 and 9 and giving them a chance of what Australia has to offer.I may have to EAT MY HAT but at least I have given it a try.
Take care Jackie
Thank you for your replies... i know that you're right... no more rainy grey days or drizzle! 300 days of sunshine sounds great.. and so does being so close to the Great Barrier Reef.... it's just so easy to get nervous when you are moving to somewhere that you have never been to before...
I have been to Cairns before for a month or so and loved it - so if Townsville is anything like that then I'll be happy... we'll just have to make sure that we live in a nice suburb... Do you know what the nice suburb are? I guess we'll find out when we get there....

Hi Laura,
We have to activate our visas by the end of August so we hope to sell our house by then to make the permanent move.Townsville is more industrialised where as Cairns is very "touristy".I have spent sometimes in Cairns,Kuranda and the reef were brilliant!!! I think that if you enjoyed Cairns then you will like Townsville.
My only concern is (can I keep my beer cold enough ?) no to be honest it is quite a big decision to move away from all of your family and friends, but I do not want to see myself in twenty years time, if I "bottled out" wondering What If ?
The next thing is about the different suburbs.Have you read Alliekates experience, how unlucky can two people be? I was actually looking around the Bushland Beach area but now I might be looking elsewhere. The nice suburbs would probably be Annandale, Belgian Gardens,West End and Mount Louisa. There are probably loads more but if you really wanted to go posh try Yarrawonga or Castle Hill.
Do you know what? I really think that we are all lucky to be in the position that we are,we have got the choice that many people don't have, this wonderful oppertunity to change our lives.
We are all nervous about change and moving into the unknown but WHAT THE HELL!!
Regards Jackie.
