WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Well I still can't believe this is happening and I don't think I will till I'm on the plane. Completing house sale 17thDec, staying with my mum over Christmas and hopeing to fly to Melbourne end of Jan, been quoted £2200 for 2 adult and 3 kids which is flying Cathay Pacific which is a fab price, going to be booking it this week. Also struggled over the decision to take our dog we've had her since 6 weeks old and she's 8 now, but I think after much consideration we're gonna take her (cost £2500) I know it's alot but I think then when we get her out of quaratine it'll be worth it the kids will love it. I am really looking forward to our new life in Melbourne, I know my hubby will love it he's been to Oz before and has never stopped talking about it and he's already got a job waiting for him. The kids will love it cause there only 5,3, and 22months. I suppose I'm just a little concerened how I'll deal with it I want to really love it and I hope I will I'm really excited, but I'm just worried with being a stay at home mum I might be a little lonely and really miss my parents. Basically I don't want to ruin it for everyone and be really miserable. I know I shouln't worry about this now but it's just that nigglying thought. Basically I need to know how other stay at home mums have coped without the support of her parent & friends and how easy to meet new people.
Bye for now Sue

I was a stay at home mum when we arrived (now working 1 day week) with a 3 yr & 1yr old. Basically take a deep breath and join in as much as possible. Find a playgroup asap so that when your hubby starts work u start playgroup. I pay $3 a session for my 2 and its great. I have made a couple of good friends (via this site) and playgroup and we have only been here 3 months. Tomorrow I am taking my 3 yr old with 2 other mams and kids to Brisbane to see the Great Big Wonderful Santa Show.
As for the stuggling without parents, well theres no getting away from that. I have found it hard just to get a break, the baby was ill for a few weeks and it really drained me not having anyone just to give me a hand, it is hard work. But the up side is at least you can go for a walk or go to the park as you have the nice weather, even just playing in the garden is a bonus.
My children are all pretty much adults now so can't really give any advice about being a stay at home mum in Australia. But I'm sure that the key is to be brave take a deep breath and get out there and enrol in a few local groups for mums and toddlers, its always a bit akward at first when you don't know anyone. But children are great ice breakers. You'll be fine don't worry.
As for your doggie, We've taken our three cavaliers they are in quarantine now in Melbourne due for release on 13th December and I can't wait!!!!
Thankyou for you replys, I just don't want to look to desperate or dwell on being homesick. I am really looking forward to going we've been talking about going to Oz for such a long time and wasn't until this year when we couln't pass the points test we thought all hope was lost until we got sponsored. It's not until the hope is taken away that you realise how much you want it.
Hi Monty can I ask you who you used to get your dogs over I'm ringing around a few today trying to get the best quote. Only 10 days now till you see them just intime for Christmas, did they cope alright with everything?
We've got the packers coming in next week, is it worth while taking washing machine other things over? Does anyone wish they'd brought over more? or less even?
Suey
Thanks Bernie! Hope everything works out for you.
I guess when it gets hard for us mums we just have to look at the kids and remind ourselves we're doing this for a better life for them!
See ya
Sue

My missus is a SAHM and since being here got stuck in straight away and has a good network of other mum friends already after only 6 months (you'll find a lot of people in the same boat). She loves it and cant see herself going back.

Hi there,
Just to let you know we put our dog who was 14 at the time into quarantine at Melbourne, I was very apprehensive about this cos of her age, but 3 vets that I worked with in England assured me that she would be okay with the journey and quarantine at this end, I was still very apprehensive but knew that she would be better off with us than rehoming her with someone else, mainly cos of her temperament, and she came out here along with our cats. It was the best decision, although she was on medication and one if our cats has an ongoing problem with cystitis, the staff at Melboune Quarantine station were brilliant, she had her meds every day from them, the cat was on a special diet, they made sure he was okay and checked over every day by them. Owners can visit the animals during the week and there are runs there to take your dogs and spend time with them. They then made the journey from Melbourne to Gold Coast after the quarantine period by plane again and settled down comfortably here.
We used animal airlines but with hindsight I would've used airpets I sorted out all the paperwork basically obtaining the import and export permits etc.. I've heard lots of good reports from peeps about Airpets so I 'd give them a whirl.
Unfortunately because we are in Adelaide and the quarantine station is in Melbourne We haven't be able to visit them. However, the staff have been great and I ring them 2-3 times a week for an update. Initially the smallest dog (Monty!!) my namesake was a little anxious but had a lot of reassurance from the staff and he's fine, Alfie and Poppy are taking it all in there stride. I've sent them goodie boxes through the post with treats and toys. Its been difficult but rehoming them wasn't an option. My only concern is how they will adopt to the wildlifeplenty of birds to bark at!!! Only 9 days to go and we'll be back together again!!!
