WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
just googled expats in Australia and came across this site it seems really friendly so thought i'd say hi. We have finally (99%) made up our minds to come to Australia, :)I can't wait. yahoo!
Initially I thought it was a case of getting a working Visa for a year and then at the end of that year hope that the place where you were working at would sponsor you for the next four years and then you were entitled to citizenship. After reading through some of the blogs on here I think it might've been a bit naive of me to think it was that easy. Need to go back to the drawing board on my research as alot of posts on here have said people are waiting for, skills assessment, police checks, med checks e.t.c. Sounds daunting!! But worth it I'm sure.

Hiya welcome to poms in Oz ,,there are sooo many different types of visa it can get abit confusing. If you tell us what trade you are in and how long youve been doing the job someone maybe able to point you in the right direction. We personally rang Visa Bureau and they did all the research for us and helped us soo much with the application.Good luck ,getting a visa is a stressful process but well worth it once you arrive in OZ.

Hi all,
Thanks for replies (i knew this site seemed friendly) can't wait to get out there and come to one of the meets that are advertised on here. Last week my boyfriend completed an on-line assessment with an agency, which we were told we had passed. Not sure how much weight that carries though? The agent called him today and seemed very helpful. She was saying that we can go down our own route and do it independently or else go through the agency, which of course is twice the price. This is confusing! Does everyone remember starting the process and feeling like this? Need to get organised! My boyfriend is a Photocopier engineer and I am a Salon Manager/Beautician. The agent has said that to qualify for a Visa for permanent residency we have to get 120 points apparently we have 115, but once again i'm not sure if that is a case of people telling us what we want to hear. How do most people go about making the move, independently or through an agent? Also is it quite common for people to be refused the Visa to allow you to live anywhere in Australia for an indefinite amount of time? We are 25 & 31, both healthy (ish, lol), without criminal records and in good jobs, we are also financially stable, do you think this sounds like we have got a good chance.
Long message, i know!!
To all you lucky folks that are already there, it is bloody freezing here!!
My boyfriend would also like to know if this emoticon is trying to be dirty? lol.
Thanks Guys.
Hi again Maxytiff!
Some of us get out through Oz independently and others use an agent, I think it just depends on personal circumstances. We have been living in Sydney just over a year now, we did it independently as my OH holds permanent Australian Residency so I came out on a spouse visa which was pretty straightforward. Obviously if you can do it yourselves you'll save heaps of money but sometimes if you're borderline with points, etc it can be useful to use an agent as they know all the loopholes and can get things organised for you. The whole adventure if very confusing and exciting and you'll be on a rollercoaster once you get the ball rolling but it's worth it when you're here....it's fantastic!!! Where are you hoping to settle in Oz?
Re your boyfriend's question about the emoticon....hmmmm I'll let you draw your own conclusions!!!
Take care - Karen
