WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
My name is Kris, I'm 34, from the UK, Self Employed and have a degree in Mechanical Engineering (BENG 2:ii hons). I've just signed up so am a newbie. I've also just started out on what seems is gonna be a mammoth quest to get a general skilled migration visa.
Hopefully I wish to migrate with my spouse - Claire. I think I'm going down the right path but each time I do a self assessment points test, my points drop each time, Foolishly I thought I had 140 points and that i'd 'sail in' - now wouldn't that be a dream entrance into Oz! But on closer inspection I think I'm dangerously close if not below the threshold of 120. I'm doing a bit more research, I bought a DIY kit and want to see how far that takes me before I have to succumb to using an agent, but I may have to try a different approach, e.g, sponsorship. Incidently is sponsorship a common method people adopt, if so where's the best place to start looking to get a sponsor?
Well I'm sure there's a million & 1 other Q's that I'll need answering and by the end of it all I'll be bald - but at least I'll be able to swim faster.
K, interesting that you are below the 120 points with a degree in Mech Eng. I have an Aero degree, which although basically Mech with a bit of Aerodynamics thrown in does nnot get me 15 MODL points, so I have to do IELTS and get Mrs Imp's skills assessed.
Assuming you have work experience, you should be well in. 60 points for degree, 15 MODL, 20 (ish) for age, 10 for work experience and 15 for english language without even doing IELTS or considering Claire. Think you are fine matey, chill!

Good luck with your plans, plenty of help available. Your a junior not a newbie here, you'll be a senior in no time.
All the best,

Thanks for the super fast responses and encouragement guys. the 2 things I'm mostly concerned over are that I only got a 2:2 hons degree and I read somewhere that It needs to be 2:1 . I hope I'm wrong. The other is I've been Self employed for the past 5 years so may have trouble supplying the necessary references (I was employed in two other firms prior to S.E but this was pre 2001). I'm told that I should be able to supply references from my most valued clients. I hope this is true or it's an IELTS test.
will let you know about the 2:1 thing, but if it is I am well and truly buggered!!! Have not seen anything about it and there is nothing on the Engineers Australia website or in the Washington Accord that mentions it. Feel sick now, you have depressed me totally!
Just checked again and there is no mention of grade of degree. If your Mech degree is from an accredited course then it should be signed up as equivalent.

Reason: Update!
Hi Kris, and to PIO, sorry can't help with the degree points, but you could always have a free chat with an agent (first 1/2 hour is normally free) to see where you stand.
Good luck.

My Mood:
Hi Kris
have not heard of anyone buying a DIY immigration kit (is that what you said?)
I would have a free chat with an agent, IMO they are worth the money if you think you are going to struggle to have enough points or prove employment
you will have to do a statutory declaration about you whole employment history with as much evidence to back it up, such as references from employers and clients, agents will know and guide you so that you include everything you need to and don't get knocked back, like I did.
it's a rollercoaster don't ya know
good luck
