WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
I really need some advice and help please if anyone knows the answers lol.
First, just a quick introduction and to tell you about myself. I am a student nurse here in Liverpool UK and im in my final year. (BA Hons) I qualify in September 08 and was wondering about nursing life in Oz. I havent got a clue really where to start as I have heard about all the diferent types of visa/work permits. I seem to be drawn to Queensland - dont know why - I have never been to Oz, and i am after all kinds of information from where jobs are advertised to buying a house. I cant seem to get a straight answer about what a general nurses anunual salary is - any ideas?? Even harder, can a newly qualified get work and be able to start straight away on arrival?? Told you I had millions of questions lol. I cant fill in the points assessment either because I havent qualified yet but I would like to start getting as much info as possible in preparation for the big event lol.
Hope someone out there can point me in the right direction.
Many thanks
Lonnie

I'm not 100% sure but think you may be able to apply for a post graduate programme. I think you have to have had some qualified experience in order to apply for the PR visa,
Why not contact the nursing board of Queensland? If you google them you'll find their web site. I do know of someone who managed to get an elective placement in Oz.

Thanks for the reply ali. I will be qualified before I start applying and should be working for a year or so. Do you know once you are given permissiom and your residency is granted, do you have a certain amount of time to get out to Oz? Is there a limit? How you understand what I mean Im not very good at explaining things lol Just reading all the old posts now there is so much to do isnt there?
Thanks again for your advice. Take Care !!

I know a friend of mine wanted to come to WA, but because she'd had mat leave, didn't have the required number of work hours (or something like that), she got sponsorhip(PR) in Coffs Harbour and hasn't looked back.
When your visa is granted it is granted from the date you have your medicals or your police checks (whichever is the earliest date). e.g. if you have your medicals done on 12 August 07, when your visa is granted it will say that you have to make your first entry (validate) your visa by 12 August 08. It sounds like you have a year, but our example was that our medicals were the earliest 18th May '07, but the visa wasn't granted until July '07.
Good luck

Both me and my husband are nurse and in the procees of visa for nursing in australia. We went for 2 interviews with Nursing Recruitments who were interviewing in the U.K one being Queensland Health (Public) & the other being through Austra Health (private health) we were sucessful with both and it put us in a bit of a dilema, but decided in the private health care in the end for a few reasons - main one being we got a better feel following interview and we fancied Melbourne anyway.
You often come across adverts in the Nursing Standard etc - and that is how we originally applied they spoonfeed you on what to do i.e. email them to express interest and attach a copy of cv then if they interested they get in contact with you. If you are invited to interview and sucessful they again spoon feed you all through the visa process and send you step by step guidaelines on how to do it and what you need to do (medicals, bloods, cxr) send (certified copies of birth cert, degree, registration from NMC) etc.
Some stipulate 3 years experience but I think it depends on other factors such as age, other life experiences etc.
Hope this helps, and please don't hesitate to contact us if you need any more info, as we will be glad to help if we can
i had an interview in oct 07 with queensland health [www.health.qld.gov.au/nursing] and an interview with a private company. qld health offer two types of visa [permanent or the 457], their starting salary for a NO1 [nursing officer one] is $ 44,628, there is extras, 12% for lates, 20% for nights, 50% for sat and public holidays, 75% sun and 150% for special bank hols [easter, labour day and show day]. i could email qld health and see what they say. there is also the nursing council for queensland [www.qnc.qld.goc.au] who you could try. i had a class mate for went to australia straight after qualifying so it should be possible, hope that helps. bec
Hi im in the same position and this is how it stands..... they will take you on a 175 independent skilled visa asap after qualifying, you just need about 6-9 mths experience, my migration agent has advised that i get work asap after qualifying then a couple of months after, i apply for my visa as its not a two minute process by the time i go through the rigmarole i,ll have the required experience and your in! as a british trained nurse your very sought after. the oz government have placed a minimun wage of $41,650 on a nurses wage so if you work on that as a minimum it will point you in the right direction. you can apply for the graduate programme but at present this will only get you a temp visa tho i know a couple of companies are looking to change it to permanent sponsorship, but if you can go on an independent visa that is always the best option that way your not tied to one place anyhow hope that helps you with the nursing as for houses check Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au that will give you an idea, we originally fancied brisbane but the bad humidity, dark early nights, touristy thema and mozzies have put us off, were headed for perth! hope ive not waffled on good luck, kelly xx
