Shane&Lynn is on a distinguished road
just starting out

hi everyone,
my name is Shane OH is lynn and we have 3 boys in tow.
I am a small building contractor - one off houses, extentions, loft conversions etc in manchester and we have finally decided to make the move to oz. i was just wandering how anyone hasfound getting work etc, and pay as opposed to cost of living. my OH is a midwife but would like to take a break from work when we get there .- is this possible on a tradies wage. I am quite willing to work on the tools and let someone else have the headaches till I get my bearings. sorry I have so many questions. just wandering if you could answer some

thanks - shane

Hi Shane & Lynne

I can't deal with any of your technical questions.

I just want to say a very warm welcome to Poms in Oz and I am sure that other members will be able to help on all other fronts.

Cheers

Contracting

Hi, Shane .
We live in Tugun southend of the gold coast,
If you want to get back into sub-contracting or selfemploment you will need a building license, which will take a couple of month's you have to do a course .
The wages for bricklaying on the coast is enough to live on .
Also you need a blue card (CSCS) to work on any site , the cost for one is about $80 to $100 dollars. I would get intouch with the local Master Builder,s they run the courses.
We are in the UK at the moment so if you need anymore help give us an e-mail.

Hiya guys we are about 40 mins inland from the Gold Coast and around here you will find work pretty easily.Surviving on one wage really depends on your financial circumstances (will you have mortgage etc,)and the hours you want to work.Self employed you will earn much more money obviously but if employed the starting rate around here seems to be $25 + per hour.hope this helps you a little

Hi Shayne & Lynn,

Just wanted to say a huge welcome to PIO, we are all a friendly bunch, we will be hoping to go too OZ as soon as we can and will be going on a 457 sponsored Visa if & when we do. I flew out there in July to Sydney for 10 days and could not believe what a fantastic place it was, it was better than my expectations and we cant wait for when the time comes for us. I went out to sort a sponsor out but unfortunately it fell through about a month after getting back to the UK but we are not giving up, just taking a break after selling our house and moving into rental until we get to OZ.

Well you will be addicted to this site like us all, it beats watching telly Good Luck with your application we have 2 kids are they are soooooo excited to go so makes it easier
