WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hi am completely new to this (obviously) and don't even know where to begin, any hints and tips would be so muchly appreciated... have a quick look around most of you seem to be in some sort of process I can't even find out how to start....
Welcome to PIO, I guess the first thing you need to do is decide which visa type you are going on, what skills, job/profession do you have? Do you have family in Oz who could sponsor you? There are lists known as the MODL (occupations in demand) and the SOL (skilled occupations list). These can be found on Department of Immigration and Citizenship and give you some idea of what skills you need to apply for a skilled visa. You may also want to talk to a migration agent to see what your chances of success would be.
Hi Bec, thanks for the reply... My partner is a roofer which I believe is on the skills list and I am a Personal Assistant but have also qualified as a Nail Technician and commencing a hairdressing course (I know cliche secretary with a nail file !!) we have no family over there so will be starting from scratch, have heard of a Migration expert but was told some of them are a bit iffy so was hoping to find a recommended one on this site which is fab, I have just found a section for my little one to talk to other kids which is a great idea...
I'm sure plenty on here will recommend agents, there are also some agents who post on here and who offer good advice. Some people choose to apply without an agent, if you're the confident sort I guess it works, but personally I preferred to use an agent for peace of mind. If you do choose to go it alone you'll get loads of help on this site with any queries.
Have you any ideas which part of Oz you'd like to move to? We're headed for South Australia, like you we're on our own, no friends or family out there, scary!!
It's a bit of a minefield I think, this whole process, and sometimes I feel it doesn't even get easier with time
However, when you're first starting, I think a good site to look at is Department of Immigration and Citizenship which is the official Government website. I also think that Australia & New Zealand Magazine, which I get from Tesco every month, is another good source of information. There are always plenty of articles for potential migrants, along with numerous adverts from migration agents, some of whom offer free initial consultations.
Good luck!!

Thanks for the Tesco's advice Rachel will wizz up tonight and grab one... I have just emailed the Australian Visa Bureau for a 'Free' consultation call as both me and my OH passed the online assessment so I guess that is a start... not sure on the area which we are looking at yet one colleague has suggested the south side as once in Perth thats all there is, we want somewhere as most people do where there is work and good schools for the kiddies...
Yes, once the initial thought of migrating is there, the next question is: but where exactly in Australia?
I don't think there is an easy way to decide which state is going to be best for you, it may be a case of trial and error!! Although we're off to Victoria, we've visited Perth twice and we absolutely love Perth and indeed Western Australia. The 'remoteness' of the city does not put me off one iota, but it's fair to say that no 2 people will have the same views about the same city!! To some extent you may be influenced by climate, job prospects, house prices etc, or you may do lots and lots of web research to try and narrow your options
Best of luck with it all. Good thing about Poms is that you'll find a variety of likes and dislikes about the various States, so keep reading the posts and even if you pick the 'wrong' state, there'll be nothing to stop you trying another!

well guys, speaking to migration consultant tomorrow so hopefully he can shed a light on some things, have been hearing some good things about Brisbane does anyone have any personal info/experience of the place??
Hi welcome! Just a quick note that Guide to Emigrating Abroad, Advice & Information on Overseas Emigration are good. We subscribe to the Australia newspaper monthly and it has loads of stories, info, jobs, property etc. The also run a couple of emigration shows each year where there are emigration experts etc. Hope that helps for now, feel free to ask any questions!
