Red face NSW or Perth?

Hello to you all

I am married with 3 children, we live in East Sussex at the moment and are really unsure of where in Australia to emigrate to!!!!!!

Obviously my OH's job will dictate our final decision (he is a CNC metal machinist - MODL). We are trying to figure out where he will be most likely to find work easily. This is beginning to stress us out a bit as when we look on employment sites there never seems to be many specific jobs!

We have been researching all locations and think either Sydney (NSW) or Perth look most suitable to us as a family. We have never been to Australia before either, so most of our research/info is from sites like this and what our friends have said!!!!

Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble!!!

Lynne

Agent app: 7th August 2007
TRA lodged: 7th September 2007
TRA back: 5th October 2007
Visa Lodged:
Medicals: Early January 2008
Police Checks: Early January 2008

IF ALL GOES WELL, PLAN TO BE THERE EARLY SEPTEMBER 2008!!!!!!!!

Hi

Me and the wife live in E Sussex and we also have three children. This must be the hardest choice to make. I have friends in both places and they sing the praises of everything about them.
Have you checked house prices in both areas? This may help you choose !!
We are off to Brisbane although once there it wont stop me looking around. My friend landed in melbourne 8 years ago then moved to brisbane and now lives in sydney. The wifes cousin has lived in sydney for 20 years and absolutely loves it there after moving to WA and then back again.
I am of the opinion life is what you make it wherever you are
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for replying! It's so hard to decide where to land when we've never travelled to Australia! The one thing that puts me off Perth is the distance between places. People have said you can feel a bit cut off. (not sure if that's true or not). I'm thinking that within NSW when travelling from place to place it will be more built up as it is here in UK. A bit more comforting when travelling around a new area maybe? We are trying to be completely realistic with how difficult things will be when we get there and not get swept along in a 'holiday' mindset!!
Do you mind me asking what stage of the process you are at?

Hi

No not at all. Just got back from xrays today they should land in Oz next week. Our visa has been lodged and house is on the market. Fingers crossed the housing market picks up soon. Im off to Sydney/Brisbane next month on work/social visit . Know what you mean about Perth being remote but as we moved from London down to a tiny village that would probably suit me.Lol the wife calls it anti social i say im just a private person Haha!!!

Good luck

Steve

Have a great time over there!! At some point it would be really helpful if you could fill me in on exactly what is involved in the medicals! Our Children are aged 11, 8 and 4. Am I right in thinking that my 11 year old will need to have a chest x-ray too? We are going to Coventry next weekend for a 'Migration Show' and to meet our agent. Have you ever been to one of these events?Good luck with your house sale, we're beginning to do ours up and probably put it on the market about April/May next year. Have your children got any thoughts or views on moving abroad?

Smile hope this helps

Hi Badal

I'm also living in east sussex and me and husband are due to move to melbourne in november ...

I lived in melbourne for 3 years previously and spent time in both Perth and Sydney and i think it very much depends on what kind of person you are/what you enjoy doing and how you like to live that helps make the decision between these 2 very different cities.

In my opinion Sydney is very modern, funky and fast paced with lost of exciting things to do and see - but you must enjoy city living and being in the hub of things. Perth is surrounded by the most amazing countryside (they call it 'down south'), has very peaceful suburbs and has a fairly good city life but is definitely not as fast paced as sydney. I also personally found it slightly behind both sydney and melbourne in terms of being cosmopolitan and culturally diverse. Its wonderful if you love the outdoor life.

So there you go, one woman's opinion ... hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks! It's really useful to get peoples views! One of our friends (who goes to Oz once a year) commented how isolated Perth was and he personally wouldn't consider it! I'm worried about feeling isolated/lonely when there anyway to begin with, and I'm thinking that to be somewhere busier may be a better distraction for us! It's rather like 'pinning the tail on the donkey' in trying to choose somewhere to live when we've never been to Australia! It all looks so good in the piccies!!!!
Are you going for good in November? What do you consider the best part of living in Australia and why are you choosing Melbourne?
Sorry to be so nosey!

WA is a vast state ( Germany, UK and Japan could easily fit into WA)and there are lots of isolated places but there are more and more suburbs growing and you're certainly not miles away from your neighbour (unless you choose to be). It's true it's probably cheaper for us to fly to Bali than to Queensland and it does have a more relaxed feel about it. I've visited Sydney and loved it as a place to visit but I've never been one for a fast city life pace. I guess it depends on what you want. I only live about 15 mins from the city (not in rush our traffic) and 20 mins from Fremantle

We too live in East Sussex and are moving to Perth in July - I am actually from Fremantle and my husband is English. He has been out there twice and loves the place. Yes it is remote from the east coast states but it is not a remote place to live. Depending on what your interests are there is something for everybody. Great suburbs along the coast if you want to be near the water - fantastic rural suburbs if you want to be closer to nature. Write a list of what is important for you to access where you live - ie schools, recreational interests, nightlife or quiet life and then perhaps I can give you some idea of what suburbs in Perth would suit your family.

Sorry to be so nosey!

Prior to moving to Perth (first time around); I lived in Oranjemund............. now that was isolated! It was a 17 hour drive down the Skeleton Coast to Cape Town........... and Oranjemund was a small oasis like town that had sprung up from nowhere in the middle of the Namib Desert.................. that was indeed isolated.

Within two weeks of arrival in Perth I was able to give up my $2 a night room in Milligan's Hostel as I scored a job up the Pilbara in Paraburdoo. That too was isolated, very isolated but it was good craic, the wages were good.................... and to be honest I did not mind the isolation one bit because I was more than happy with the job.......... and as it is with everything.................. it's what you make of it.
