My OH is there at the moment for a couple of weeks checking out Sydney and the Gold Coast. We spent a year there and worked in Sydney several years ago now, he said since then Central Sydney has become a much busier city, but within a couple of miles you can be at beautiful beaches - we lived in Manly on the North Shore and had to get the ferry into the harbour to work which was fantastic, the northern beaches are a hop over to the city. The south of the ciy I haven't much experience of but its a lot more built up, lots of property about. We did also live inland around Parramatta which is about 40 mins on the train into the city, house prices are a lot more affordable there as it can be a bit costly in the city. Do your research as neighbourhoods within Sydney can be vastly different.
We have chosen to move to the Gold Coast now that we have a family as its more of a laid back Aussie beach life we're after - and also can't afford Sydney prices!!
