WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Already joined a forum on NZ but still can't make up our minds, I (OH joiner and not very good with computers) I'm a secretary(legal if I have to)/receptionist/administrator whatever job comes along, so I get to do all the hard work of looking and chatting (enjoy it really, just nothing else gets done).
Did anybody else have this problem of deciding which would be best? We have a friend in Auckland and he loves it, and a friend moving to Australia, can't remember where but going to live near and work for family and can't wait. As I have only just joined not had a chance to read everything yet, but on the NZ one been looking for about a week, lots of likes but also a few dislikes, a lot of the gripe about NZ seems to be not a lot of money left for living after paying necessities, is this the same in Aus. What would a joiner expect to earn
OH skills would appear to be needed at both locations, presume but only looked a little bit for myself but seems to be a market out there just whether they want to employ me.
Have to go and sort dinner out now but would be grateful for any thoughts, advice, feedback.
I have heard very mixed reviews about NZ, more negative than positive, eg weather, not a lot to do, houses suffering from damp etc, I believe that the british ex pat site for NZ has a lot of reviews it might be worth having a look at that. Also smoggieswilltravel's michelle is really quite knowledgeable about NZ, I think some of this is from 1st hand experience and also friends. try pm ing her and ask her what she knows.
Hi we were looking at NZ for a while too. Don't have a huge amount of info but we were told by an agent that you had to have a job offer out there before you could apply for a visa. May be worth looking into if that affects you.
Hi, I also looked at NZ immi website. In my case I gave up because of the qalifications necessary in my hasband ocupation. They were more strict than OZ!
I have a friend from NZ, she also says there is nothing in NZ, that's why she is here.
But remember if you have a visa to OZ you can also go to NZ or vice versa! So, in that case I chose the easiest ( less strict), it depends on ocupation requiremnets, etc. Have a look on both immi websites.
All the best with your decision.
We too looked at NZ and although houses and the cost of living appeared much cheaper than Oz the wages were so low we felt we would take a step backwards. My OH salary would have dropped by around 2/3'rds Although we would have been able to purchase our home outright we felt that we would not be in a position to save any more which therefore meant should we want to leave NZ it would incredibly difficult. Just from a financial point of view it was 'undo able'. The weather is supposed to be very similar to the UK as is the landscape.
Having said that my friends family have moved out there and have never looked back, they bought a house within weeks of being there and totally love it.
Not much help I guess but for us the main reason as I said was money, we felt it was to big a backward step for us.
Hi! We also looked at NZ (Briefly!) primarily me 'cos of my fears of spiders & snakes. Our main consideratons were however, weather & job opportunites for OH (I'm a nurse, he's in retail). Have decided in the end on Oz but SA or WA remains a mystery! We did think about outdoor life as this is what we enjoy but decided probably could access this in different places in Oz, ie snow, canoeing, camping etc. In the end though, we were not sure of job opps for OH & decided OZ would be better bet. heck! What's to stop you from moving again?!
LOL,
Sally
Hi, my OH is NZ and we are going to..........Aus!! His family is split 50-50 between OZ and NZ and I can only tell you that his sisters in NZ are struggling like mad despite both of them working and having oh's who are working. Like has been said before not much money left over after living expenses have been paid. OH also says that it's much harder to find a job in NZ. The weather is much the same as here, and Bl**dy cold in winter without central heating (mostly) just the portable gas bottle heaters. That said, it is beautiful and rather like Blighty about 30 years ago! I love it there and perhaps we may go back when we retire, but for now, with children in tow it's Aus for us.
If you're not sure, do your research first, and a lot of it. NZ is beautiful without doubt but financially may be harder. It's horses for courses so only you can decide where's best for you. Hope this may help a little. Good luck with the decision.

Apparently there are more NZers in Oz than there are in NZ - that suggests something to me about the comparison between the two of the opportunities available.
For us - NZ for hols but not to live - though it's all down to personal choice and what you're looking for in your new life really.

Hi we originally wanted to go to Aus and then was so set on NZ for a couple of years. Went out last summer and toured around North. It is a magical country really beautiful and we had such a great time, BUT and there is a but, we found it a little too quite! The towns are far apart and alot of sheep in between. We are a young family 35/33 with kids 9/5 and we were a bit concerned what they would do when they were teenagers. I think if we were much older we would find it a really restful place to be. If you live in say Wales right now or are used to a slow rural lifestyle here in England you may adjust easier. Another thing that I found is how much I love wildlife and animals and there is mainly birdlife here so I felt something was missing. (Marine Life is there of course).
Good points are camping and beaches are beautiful, people friendly, mind winters (we went in August and it was pleasant like our spring. Towns we thought were great to live perhaps were Tauranga (East coast North) and Whangeri in Northland. Walking great and of course no bugs like Aus!!!! Felt really safe there too.
We decided it wasn't for us and are now looking at Brisbane area Aus. The climate is much more consistent there year round, only gutted we didn't go there, but that's life! Also we would love to go to NZ for holidays and explore more.
