Thanks for your comments

Many thanks for your feedback/comments, the decision to move is hard enough but together with choosing where to go I seem to have a constant headache.

I recently returned to work after having time off to look after my son (now 4 and in school full time, daughter 9) wasn't worth it before as childcare would have eaten all my wage, so the thought of both my OH and myself working and still not having enough left to enjoy ourselves as a family and for little luxuries, been there done that don't want to do it again.

Also have to take into consideration that I absolutely hate spiders, bugs anything like that, but OH has said that if we decide to take the plunge I will have to try hypnotherapy!!

Going to do some more reading/chatting now, decisions, decision.

Cheers

Tracey

Tracey,
I have to tell you that my fear of spiders nearly stopped us going!!! You are deff. not alone in that! However, I decided that the plusses out did the minuses, but I also did quite a bit of research & ,most people agree that spiders are actually not too much of a problem unless you are in the outback!
I lived abroad before (Carribbean) and had I known there were Tarantulas probably would not have gone but actually only saw 2 in the 2 years we were there & guess what? I coped & what's more, lived to tell the tale!!! It is an anxiety that I have but compared to worry about 'am I doing right thing for my kids?', pales into insignificance!
try to keep it in perspective & go for it!
LOL,
sally

It helps to know I'm not the only coward.

Your right, we are definitely doing this so our children have a "better way of life", our daughter whose 9 keeps asking when and where were going, can't wait, son of nearly 5 doesnt really understand but both make friends easily so sure they won't have any problems.

Anyway, promised myself an early night tonight as the only thing I seem to be doing lately is chatting and reading, got a tonne of ironing to do, but hey it will still be there tomorrow.

Good night!!!

Tracey

My vote goes with Abi&Dan
I have a house in the bay of islands for holidays in summer but couldn't live full time in NZ or do winter there.
Half of the kiwi's are in oz for the money so if your not retired Oz is the go.

Hi all

This is an interesting topic for me as i have applied to join the NZ navy and also the Oz navy. (im currently a serving submariner in the Royal Navy) My first choice was NZ, based solely on the fact its one of only 3 islands in the world that has no snakes (Yes im a big girls blouse However that said it has a few nasty spiders too! The major difference between NZ and Oz aside of the creepies and weather is the Money. I can earn twice as much and a little more in OZ than NZ. However i think that NZ is far more beautiful than OZ and a British person would probably find it easier to settle into NZ based on the weather. There is a big Scottish influence in the South Island as it resembles Scotlands beautiful scenery and coldish weather. I guess as people have alreay said it a question of what motivates you to want to live there. Money isnt everthing but it will help when your trying to establish a new life for you and your family.
Thanks for letting me put my 2 pennies worth in.

Cheers
Jack

Oz or NZ

We tried emmigrating to NZ last year as we already had a few friends out there, the points system is abit more difficult than OZ. We found we were in a catch 22 situation because to have enough points for automatic selection you need bonus points for having a job offer although a lot of jobs require you to have a visa first before applying. You just end up sitting in their emmigration pool for 6 months which they say you will get selected as required but then after 6 months you need to re-apply and pay the fee again. We thought it was just a money spinner. Thankfully now we are well on our way to OZ and know we have made the right choice. I would suggest using an agent for OZ as it makes the process a hell of a lot easier. Hope this has been some help.

Talking Spiders BIG ISSUE TOO!!

Hi Tracey & Sally, I'm so terrified about spiders and bugs too and that was one of the reasons I originally opted for New Zealand. However, I had to really get my head around the possibility of one in my house (ok outside of course) but on my territory NOOOOOO!!
We have all decided in our family that spiders are friends! We had a huge spider in our house the other week and I tried this theory with the kids saying "spiders are our friend" we kept saying it and I said "I can do this, I can pop a glass over". Next thing, my five year old daughter screamed histericly and then we all screamed.....Hoover came out I am afraid, so failed miserably!!!

Anyway, could try this and watch Charlottes Web, lovely film and has helped us realise how special spiders are and how many flies we'd have without them.

Still working on the psycotherapy! It is just a fear though and got to work throgh it Bernie.

I try to be brave too so as not to scare the kids, we even have a bug catcher which has a two foot handle and a box to trap them in at the end but still can't bring myself to catch anything, smallish ones I'm not so bad its the big ones that freak me out. OH has had to move wardrobes before now to get one thats gone behind before I would go to bed.

How bad is this, not long after we moved in to our house, about 10 years ago, I even had my 63 year old neighbour Sheila on top of step ladders catching a spider that was on the ceiling I was lucky she was in because I was just about to embarass myself and ask some workmen over the road if one of them would get it.

OH says its all in the mind and I tell him that the only reason he's still around is to catch the spiders.

Tracey
