WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
hello everyone,my family and i are considering a move to oz and would greatly appreciate any advice you guys can offer us on this daunting/exciting undertaking. i am a 37 year old electrician from Middlesbrough, my wife is a teaching assistant at our local school and we have three daughters aged 15,2 and 7 months. we have started looking at different websites but there is just so much to take in and the best people to ask are the ones who have been through it already or are in the process of doing it! my parents are also considering moving, they are both retired. any advice would be of great help such as what type of visa would be best, where is the most popular place for Brits to go, what is the jobs situation, what is the education system like, what visa would my parents need what are the best web sites to visit, and is Australia the better standard of life that everyone thinks it is in cold old england! many many thanks,we look forward to reading any advice you can offer us. best wishes, the craddy family.
Welcome Craddy family!
best thing is to search through the forums as there is a huge amount of info & advice on here. Also have a look at British Expats (sorry PIO!) as they have job specific forums which may be of help. May be worth having a couple of free telephone consults with immigration agents, loads of views about good & bad ones on here!
However, before you really throw yourselves in to the whole thing, just have a really cold hard look at what you will be leaving behind, what you hope to gain from the move, is that realistic and what are the costs involved. As I have already said, spending some time looking through previous threads is a great way to start.
best of luck!
sally
Lots of questions and i've forgotten most of them already - sorry
First step I suppose would be how are your going to get there?? i.e. on what visa?
You would be looking at the 136 skilled visa seeing as your a sparky, I would imagine although this visa will soon change to be called something different (sorry cant remember what they are going to call it now). You would need approx 6 years work experience in your field of work to go on a 136. Regarding your parents I think there is such thing as a Parents sponsor Visa not sure if this is going to change soon or not though as well.
I think your best bet would be to telephone and agent for some free advice on the best route to take on getting you to Australia.
Is Australia as great as everyone says?? Big question and I could get in alot of trouble here if I say 'of course it is' as there are a few peeps who think not, so you would need to read all the old threads on here, there is one currently running called 'is the grass greener' by Essex to Aus.
Once again where to live is a matter of personal choice you have a choice of so many lovely places i.e. Melbourne, Adeladie, Queensland and Sydney etc.... so check them all out and read the threads on them and see what would suit yourself and family. Have you any family or friends in Australia?
Your job is on the skilled list so you will be fine for work in all areas and I believe your wifes job is also on the skilled list, so a good start for you all!!!
Can I ask why you fancy Australia? I never really thought of ever moving to Australia but went on holiday there and loved it. I have 2 boys age 15 and 13 and they cant wait to go my eldest wants to be a reptile vet or marine biologist so this would be the best place to live for him I guess, he had already decided that Australia was where he wanted to live since he was about 13 years old!!! I thought going there it may change his mind but infact it changed all of ours.
Gd luck hope you get all the answers your looking for

Hi Andy, I'm still a novice at all this but what I've found since starting the "move to Oz process"(we've just sent the visa application off) is that theres a lot of paperwork initially & you have to repeat & repeat yourself on forms. In all honesty we couldn't have gone thro' it without a migration agency(we're using the visa bureau) they help you step by step. However it is costly & they estimate appx £4000 for fees & medicals etc. On top of that you have solicitors costs cos certificates & references need to be certified. Having said that even tho' we've had rows over difficulties getting refs etc we're more keen than ever. I spoke to someone yesterday who's just come back from a reccie in Brisbane & they said the houses aren't that cheap, food etc isn't cheap, wages are lower & fashions crap!! BUT we want to go to get out of the rat race & for a better Lifestyle!! Hope I don't sound pessimistic, best of luck Michele x

............
OMG Michele are they still going move there after their reccie???
aussiemove.com and realestate.com.au are good sites to look at. aussiemove gives you suburbs in perth and brissy mostly and you can check house prices on realestate.com all over aus.
We can all give advice on the process, but at the end of the day like kdal says it's down to why you want to go etc. There is quite a few posts about contributory parents visa and gollywobbler aka Gill is our resident expert in that field having seen her mum through the process - however, that one is a long process.
We also have a some agents, who regularly post who offer advice and also updating the forum on news about any changes at DIMIA
Good luck with the process
Ali

Hiya we made the move last year and like you knew nothing in the beginning,we used Visa Bureau as our agents and they were fantastic, explained all the different visas and which would be best for us ,as the others have said its personal preferance where you go and what to do,Some things arent as cheap as i thought they would be ,its a bit chillier in winter than i thought it would be ,and yep clothes shopping is pants ,,BUT we love it here and would not change anything for the world ,,a move like this is going to be what you make it,,stick with poms in oz to post all your queries and questions ,we are a friendly site and someone always has an answer ,you could look at AllJobs.com.au - Search for Jobs in Australia as you can search by proffesion and area, this site also gives most of the jobs papers on one page ,,hope this helps abit and good luck with everything ,

hello again and thanks for all your help. in answer to the question of why we want to move to Australia it boils down to the better climate(its poured down non stop for a week here and it is so hard to drag yourself out of bed) better standard of life for the kids where they can play outside and not give you a heart attack if you loose sight of them for one second, less stress hopefully and the country looks so beautiful when we see it on TV, and hopefully with the cash we made in the ridiculous house price boom over here we could get a nice home without worrying about a massive mortgage! once again many thanks for all the advice so far and we look forward to reading any more we receive. best wishes the Craddy family.
