WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
Hi all! Where do I start..... theres me and my partner and 3 children who live in Scotland. We had an Agent who we paid a fortune to help us get our visas. My partners job description does not appear in the 'drop down box' for the skilled assessment. The Agent advised us that Scott (my partner) would have to go to Australia and sit an exam. He is an Offshore Manager in the oil industry with a permanent job (whom he will still be employed with if we ever get to move to the Darwin area of Australia). We have had all our birth certificates, photographs, etc certified and sent off. The only drawback is Scott not wanting to go and sit an exam to prove he is an Offshore Manager. He sent off his certificates and qualifications and doesn't see why he needs to sit an exam - he's done them before, passed them and doesn't want to sit them again. Is it possible to go another route in getting visas without my beloved having to fly off downunder and sit another exam? Please help! Kerry

It is a pain i am having to sit my exams again for my skill(when we get over there) which yes as you would of thought all the certs that are handed over would be ample. You feel like saying to the oz's WHAT'S GOING ON but, what a bu**er.
I agree that it seems unfair that your OH will have to sit further exams but unfortuanately it would appear that most skilled workers have to re-train and prove themselves to the Ozzies!
My OH has been a plumber/gas fitter for 20 years and it came as abit of a shock to him that all of his qualifications basically mean nothing in Oz. The way I look at it is if they are good at their job then they should breeze through any training and exams so there is no need to worry and it will be worth it in the end!!
You are not alone I think most people on PIO are in the same situation, think positive and you'll be OK. Wish you lots of luck.

I have to say that I had never heard of this before, but I do know that the aussies have different classifications for different trades...for example an engineer in oz is someone who has a degree, they would call a british qualified engineer a mechanic!!, so I wonder if it is the case with managers for certain occupations???, and like you say the exam is a way of making sure that they can do the equivelant job in OZ!!
