Aussie houses

Hi Clare
Welcome to Poms in Oz
The cities that are most expensive go like this
Sydney, Darwin, Perth/Melbourne, Canbera, Adelaide/Brisbane ,Hobart
It should be remembered though that the ease of getting work and the pay rate also varies and you will find on average that Adelaide,Brisbane and Hobart are harder to get a well paying job in depending on what you do of course
I hope this helps
STEVE

Perth has had somewhat of a property boom in the last 18 months - 2 years, but that seems to be settlling now. It may be better to think about what you need as a couple/family and which place best meets that. e.g. If you want to be near to other cities etc. then the Eastern states are best as in WA it's cheaper to fly to Bali than it is to Brissy.

Hiya

Have a look on: www.realestate.com.au it's a great site..... it's my bible to house prices.... and it's also nice to have a look in other peoples houses!!!

it will give you all the properties for sale in what ever region you want... and then you can look at suburb reports as well....
just type in your price and number of beds etc and off you go!!!

hope that helps

Hi Clare, the house prices still look good to me although Australia is said to have by far the most over-valued houses in the Western world, with prices 52 per cent higher than justified by rental values, compared with 33% in the UK and 8% in NZ (so it says here!). The price of housing relative to incomes is 50 per cent higher in Australia than in similar countries. Wages are much lower than in the UK and taxes are some of the highest in the world.
Despite this!!! house prices still seem attractive as it seems we’ll get more for our money than in the UK. Average house prices don’t tell you much, Sydney average is £230 and could get you a large, four-bed house two bath in many areas although in the city & eastern and northern suburbs it’ll get you a 1 bed house with a small back-yard. According to the 'Cost Of Living Calculator' if you earn £30,000 in the UK you’ll only need to earn £22,000 in Oz to have the same disposable income? As to where would be a good city to start, Adelaide is said to have the most affordable housing in Oz.. but then again Burnley is said to have the most affordable housing in England!! Mmm.

Smile Thanks for the info

Hi Thomas,
Thanks for the information, this site is great, several people have taken the time to respond to me already.

We pay 40% tax on our wages here in England (as we earn over a certain amount), is it as high as that in Oz?

We would not need a mortgage as we own our house in the UK and could buy in Oz with the funds from the sale of our current home.

It's so hard to try to establish where to start, some people have advised Perth is great for families, so we may start there.

thanks to everyone who has taken time out to reply

Clare
