Smile 6 weeks to go

Hello all, especially all expats in Melbourne as that where we're headed. I have found this site SO useful over the past few months, occasionally adding a posting but really just reading everbody else's news/worries....Now it's time to get a little more involved and hopefully make a few online friends that I can call on for advice as our big move gets closer. We fly out on 27th June...that's myself, husband and 'two little boys' (could be song in that, don't you think?!) aged 3 and 5. No job to go to (husband's in IT so we don't think it'll be a problem, I'm a primary school teacher), no house (we have rented a furnished holiday home for a month in Bayswater area) and no car (will be the first purchase we make). We have so much to learn!

Have yet to rent out our house here but the removal van is booked and we have began to visit family around the country to say goodbye...weird....

I feel quite numb about the whole thing really (is this normal or am I heading for a big emotional fall?), but I am so looking forward to the adventure of our new life. NOT looking forward to 24 hours on a plane with the 2 small boys mind you...

Anyway, please say 'HI' ...

Drea

Hiya Drea

Just saying Hi! Not in Oz yet but will be in Melbourne when we are.

I spent some of my childhood in Oz and was in Bayswater (only between about 5 and 7 though so all memories are very sunny and happy - probably not the best person for any advice!!)

Just to say good luck witht he whole thing and hope you settle in fast x

Hi, you are making me nervous. We go the 1st October and while I can't wait to get there I am dreading the leaving part. If I had only 6 weeks left I think I would be like you too, numb. We are heading to Perth and we keep thinking we should be doing more things as time is going to fly. We have booked our flights and shippers and a holiday let for 3 weeks when we get there. Still need to book a hire car.

We are in the same boat as you, no job, no car etc. Exciting isn't it? People we speak to think we are mad.

I hope all goes well with your move and have fun for the next 6 weeks!

Sarah.

we head out to noosa, north of Brisbane in about 5/6 weeks. We are VERY excited. No job, no car, no real plans. fortunatley staying with sister and family for first few weeks "to acclimatise", (and have a sneaky little holiday). The very best of luck to you and everyone else heading out.

Thanks to all of you

Thanks all who've replied to my post! And yes, Georgie, I shall give you a call, it'll be so good to know there's someone out there who knows what we're going through.
We're still looking for a tenant for our house here...that will be such a great big tick off our list of things 'To Do'.
I feel that I should be doing more....I'm doing more thinking than action!
I keep checking the houses to rent websites and can't decide which suburb I like the look of most! We'll be doing so much investigating by car in the first few weeks, another MUST will be a DVD player to keep the kids entertained in the car!

Anyway, wil be back to check on all the postings soon!

If you pm me before you leave i will send you my mobile number okay. Will you OH be working or do you have to both look for work?

Do you need stocking up with coffee bread baked beans sugar tea bags etc etc? Let me know if i can help as it will be tiring and you dont want to be searching for the supermarket in the dark. When we came we arrived in the dark, had no food and no car Dean had to walk through the reserve (no lighting the street lighting is very poor in the suburbs) to find the Coles supermarket. Wish we had someone offering to stock our cupbourds for our arrival. Any how its just a thought
maybe speak to you later have a safe journey. What time do you land?
Bye

Thanks, Georgie! We land in Melbourne at a decent hour...3.15 pm....we are coming via a 10 day break in Sydney where we hope to get over the jet lag, see the sights and meet up with some old friends there. I shall definitely be in touch and the offer for stocking up on essentials is wonderful. Thank you so much. We have sensibly booked a hire car for the first week, so we'll be able to get from the airport to our house rental...if we can find it!

Having a bit of a deflated day today as I saw my mum and even though she won't come out and say it straight, she really doesn't want us to go...will miss the grandchildren SO much...this emigrating lark is not easy emotionally, eh?

But I'm determined to enjoy this experience, so I shall pick myself up (thanks to a glass of the old vino) and get on with the planning!

Bye!
