WelcomeIf you are new to Poms In Oz and migrating to Australia or currently living in Australia feel free to say hi to all the other either in or moving to Oz.
for people living in auss!!! do you still convert $ into pounds when you buy something if not how long did it take to propper work out the money. everything i look at in auss houses cars ect ect i have a pen and paper working out how much in english it is ..dnt really wanna be doing this when im living over there..thanks
I think it is a natural inclination! We still do it now! The other thing is that I think you tend to do this sort of calculation for as long as you have a financial tie with U.K...
I only do it to work out if something is good value..........the only way I can do this is to work out what it would be in pounds and then how much I think it would have cost me in UK.........We are pretty lucky as we are on almost the same wages here as in the UK so dont have to consider any other factors!
All sounds v v complicated BUT you will be amazed at how good you get at it.

When we were in Brissy last year at a freinds house, we (the wife and me) talked about how cheap things were and we converted everything into pounds to explain our point.
Our freinds came up with "you earn your money in pounds, we earn our money in dollars. I spend a dollar, you spens a pound. You get out of the habit of converting very quickly."
Point made.

Totally agree! We earn dollars so what's the point in converting it back into pounds...unless it's to cry about some prices / glory in others!
We have a bank account we left in the UK, primarily for birthday presents for my friend's children or if mine get money sent to them. I do sometimes think of the small balance that should be in there -if my brother ever pays back the money he owes me.... - and convert that in my head ; mainly 'cos it sounds more!:)
its the little things in the shops espec the womens stuff that make me stop and think
i.e. i went to buy a new eyeliner pencil and it was $18.85 my first instinct was god thats expensive as in the uk it would of been 4.99 approx - it took a while to remember that i earn in dollars and have to remember that i buy in dollars. But when you first glimpse at something it just dings in my head ooohh how pricey .... does that make sense !!!!
on the whole we sometimes convert by approx 2.4 just to make sure we arent being ripped off

My mom doesnt do it anymore, but then she has been there 10 yrs now.
She justs gets in a right mess when she comes back over here, cus she doesnt bother converting she just changes the £ to $ sign (ie £5=$5) and thinks everythings really cheap!! Until she gets her credit card statement!!
